Clarks Summit, PA – Keystone College's offense erupted for 21 runs in a pair of five-inning victories over Baptist Bible College on Saturday afternoon as the Giants defeated the Defenders by scores of 10-2 and 11-3 in Colonial States Athletic Conference softball action. Keystone improves to 6-10 on the season with the sweep including a 4-6 mark in conference play.
In Saturday's opener, Baptist Bible (1-15, 0-8 CSAC) took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats on a solo home run by Amber Kachelries, but Keystone responded with four runs in the half of the frame as
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area) and
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional) hit RBI doubles before
Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail) ripped a two-run home run to left field. The Giants extended their lead to 5-1 the following inning on an RBI base hit from Scialpi.
After the Defenders cut their deficit to 5-2 in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Charlotte Rutkowski, Keystone restored their four-run advantage in the home half of the frame on a
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen) RBI base knock.
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus) pushed the Giants' lead to 7-2 in the fourth inning before Keystone walked off with the mercy rule win after putting up three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) drove in the Giants' eighth run of the game with a double before Long and Rivera delivered RBI singles to end the contest.
Worobey went the distance on the mound for Keystone, allowing the two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters in the contest. Six different Giants recorded two hits apiece in the game one victory as Keystone outhit Baptist Bible in the contest, 14-4.
Kachelries suffered the loss for the Defenders after allowing 10 runs on 14 hits while fanning three batters. Jenna Bont had two of Baptist Bible's four hits in the game.
In Saturday's nightcap, Baptist Bible took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Ashley Snare, but Keystone leveled the game up at one-apiece in their half of the frame as Rivera came home when Sawicki was thrown out stealing second.
The Giants opened the game up in the third inning, using six hits and two errors to scored nine runs to claim a 10-1 lead.
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) and Scialpi had RBI singles before Sawicki hit a two-run single down the left field line.
Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical) worked a bases-loaded walk before Sara Stacey hit an RBI single up the middle.
Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area) scored on a wild pitch before Thompson and Scialpi both recorded their second RBI base hits of the inning.
Baptist Bible got a run back in the top of the fourth inning on a pair of Keystone errors, but the Giants got the run back in the home half of the frame when Rivera crushed a home run deep over the left field fence. The Defender capped the scoring on a solo home run by Lauren Shepard in the top of the fifth inning, but Worobey again shut the door with her second complete game of the day in which she yielded just three hits while recording three more Ks on the day.
Thompson, Scialpi, Sawicki, and Stacey had two hits apiece in the game two victory for the Giants.
Bont suffered the loss in the circle for Baptist Bible after surrendering 10 runs on five hits and seven walks in 2.1 innings while Shepherd was charged with one run on four hits and one walk in 1.2 innings.
Keystone will be back in action on Monday afternoon in a CSAC doubleheader against Immaculata University in La Plume. First pitch between the Giants and Mighty Macs is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Edmunds Field.
