La Plume, PA – Keystone College's softball team celebrated Senior Day in style on Saturday afternoon, sweeping visiting Notre Dame of Maryland University with a pair of 8-0, five-inning wins in Colonial States Athletic Conference action at Edmunds Field. The Giants, who honored
Chelsey Hropovich (Seward, PA/Ligonier Valley),
Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail),
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen), and
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) between games on Saturday, improve to 12-18 on the season and finish just two games out of a playoff spot with a 10-12 record in conference play.
In Saturday's opener, Keystone scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead to take control of the game. Schraden got the scoring started with a two-run single before coming home on an infield single by
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area). Scialpi scored the Giants' fourth run on a
Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area) sacrifice fly before a
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman) base-hit plated
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional).
Keystone tacked on three runs in the home fourth to take an 8-0 advantage. Worobey scored on a
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) sacrifice fly before Long and Sawicki hit RBI singles.
The run support was more than enough for Worobey, who tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout while matching a career-high with 11 strikeouts on the day. The complete game was Worobey's 22
nd of the season.
Schraden, Long, and Worobey had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offense.
Tawny Cevory suffered the loss in the circle for Notre Dame of Maryland after allowing eight runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter in the game. Brea Kehr went 2-2 while Meghan O'Conner also added a hit for the Gators in the game one setback.
In game two, Keystone scored in all four inning in which they batted to pull away with another, 8-0 victory after five innings.
The Giants opened the scoring the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double to left field by Long before Bucklaw hit her team-leading third home run of the season the following inning, a shot over the fence in centerfield, to give the host's a 2-0 advantage after two innings of play.
Keystone extended their lead to 5-0 by plating three runs in the home third. Long hit a two-run single to left-center before scoring when Sawicki doubled down the left-field line.
The hosts added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to close out the scoring. Long hit a two-run single to left field before Scialpi came home with Keystone's eighth run of the game on a base-hit by Bucklaw.
Worobey notched her 10
th win of the season after scattering three hits over 4.1 innings of work while fanning four batters in the game. Schraden came on in relief and record the final two outs of the game including one via the strikeout.
Long powered the Giants' offensively with three hits and five RBIs while Bucklaw went 2-2 with a pair of RBIs. Worobey and Scialpi also contributed a pair of hits for Keystone in the nightcap.
Ashley Fallon suffered the loss for Notre Dame in game two after surrendering eight runs on 11 hits. Cevory, Wendi Winkleman, and Jennifer Whiting accounted for the Gators' three hits in the game two loss.
Keystone will close out the 2015 season on Sunday afternoon as they host the University of Scranton in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. at Edmunds Field.
