Allentown, PA – Holding a 6-3 edge at halftime of Tuesday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game, host Cedar Crest outscored Keystone College 7-1 in the final 30 minutes of play to pick up a 13-4 victory. The Falcons improve to 1-7 on the season and 1-5 in conference play with their first win of the season while the Giants, who got two goals and an assist from
Maria DiMartin (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), remain winless in six contests this spring (0-6 CSAC).
Cedar Crest opened the scoring just 33 seconds into Tuesday's game before
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) leveled the score at one-apiece with an unassisted goal at the 27:45 mark of the first half. The Falcons answered with the next two goals of the contest before DiMartin's first collegiate goal with 12:43 showing on the first half clock cut the Giants' deficit to 3-2. The host answered with a three-goal run before DiMartin scored with 52 seconds left in the period to make it a 6-3 game at halftime.
Cedar Crest extended their lead to four goals just 40 seconds into the second half before
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) found the back of the cage after taking a feed from DiMartin just under five minutes into the half to make it a 7-4 game. The Falcons would pull away the rest of the way though, netting the final six goals of the contest to close out the scoring.
Emily Rodenberger scored seven goals to pace Cedar Crest's attack while Vivianna Samite netted four goals for the Falcons, who got 10 saves from Nicole Rivera in the victory.
Domonique Swann (Waldorf, MD/Westlake) made five saves in the Giants' cage as Keystone enjoyed their strongest defensive performance of the year with the 13 goals against marking the fewest the squad has conceded in a game this season.
AAliya Hayes (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) tied for a game-high with six groundballs on the day, Hodanich and
Kaelyn Englert (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) picked up five groundballs each, and DiMartin and Zuchowski contributed four groundballs apiece in the loss. Englert also led Keystone with three draw controls while
Yauris Romero (Dedham, MA/Dedham) collected a pair of draw controls on the day.
Hodanich led the visitors with four caused turnovers while Hayes added three caused turnovers in the setback to the Falcons.
For the game, Cedar Crest held a slim, 23-21 edge in shots while Keystone claimed a 34-33 advantage in groundballs while collecting 10 of the game's 19 draws.
The Giants return to the field on Saturday afternoon with a conference game against Immaculata University that is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in La Plume.
