La Plume, PA – Visiting Centenary College remained unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference softball play on Thursday by sweeping a pair of games from Keystone College at Edmunds Field. The Cyclones, who won the first game 6-4 before claiming a 5-1 victory in the nightcap, lift their record to 5-13 this spring and 4-0 in the CSAC while the Giants slip to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in league action.
In Wednesday's opener, Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning at
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area) singled to right-center to score
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus) from second before doubling their lead in the third inning when
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) scored on an RBI base hit from
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional).
Centenary leveled the contest at 2-2 in the visitor's fourth on a single and a Keystone error, but the Giants answered right back in their half of the frame with a pair of runs as
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) drove in
Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical) with a single before coming home on a Worobey base knock.
The Cyclones once again rallied to knot the score up at four-apiece in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Carolyn Clites before going ahead in the visitor's seventh with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single before retired the Giants in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Centenary starting pitcher Kylie Morgan surrendered four runs on nine hits over four innings of work before handing the ball off to Samantha Darling, who picked up the win after tossing three innings of no-hit ball. Clites finished the game 3-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Cyclones' offense.
Worobey suffered the loss in the circle for Keystone after allowing six runs on seven hits to go along with one strikeout. Thompson and Rivera paced the Giants with two hits apiece in the game one setback.
In the nightcap, Centenary jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bats of the game as Becca Raymond and Erin Walsh sandwiched RBI doubles around an RBI single from Ashley Eisenstein.
The Cyclones extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third inning with a pair of unearned runs before Keystone got on the board in the home half of the frame as Worobey came home on an RBI single down the line off the bat of Scialpi.
That would close out the scoring for both teams in game two though as Darling picked up her second win of the day with a complete game performance in which she allowed the lone run on eight hits while picking up a pair of strikeouts. Clites was 3-4 at the plate while Eisenstein and Walsh added two hits and two RBIs apiece in the nightcap.
Worobey turned in her second complete game pitching performance of the day for Keystone, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while fanning three Cyclones. Scialpi and
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen) led the Giants with a pair of hits each in the game.
Keystone is scheduled to return to the diamond on Friday with a CSAC twin bill at Rosemont College that is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. in Rosemont, Pennsylvania.
