Reading, PA – Keystone College split a pair of non-conference volleyball matches on Friday at a tri-match hosted by Penn State Berks. The Giants defeated Wilkes University in four sets in their opening contest before dropping a four-set decision to the host Nittany Lions in the nightcap to see their record move to 5-2 on the season.
In Friday night's opener against Wilkes (4-4), Keystone won a tight first set, 28-26 and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 decision in the second game. The Colonels stayed alive with a 25-18 win in the third set, but the Giants sealed the win with a 25-21 decision in the fourth game.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) paced Keystone's attack with 20 kills in the win over Wilkes while
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added seven kills apiece against the Colonels.
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) led the Giants with 24 assists and four service aces while
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) contributed 11 helpers.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) picked up a team-leading 14 digs for Keystone, who posted a .311 hitting percentage.
Ally Paskas led Wilkes with 13 kills, Ellen Mook had 11 kills, and Abby Sanders chipped in 10 kills in the loss. Megan Powers dished out a match-high 45 assists while Julie Winkle led all players with 28 digs for the Colonels.
In the nightcap against Penn State Berks (2-4), the hosts won the first set 25-19 before Keystone leveled the match with a 25-23 decision in game two. The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 edge with a 25-18 win in the third frame before sealing their second triumph of the tri-match with a 25-15 victory in game four.
Zuchowski again led the Giants with 13 kills, Larkin had 10 kills, and
Monique Paogofie (Waianae, HI/Waianae) added seven kills in the setback.
Mosier handed out a team-best 24 assists while Binkley added 16 helpers to go along with a pair of service aces.
Heitman finished with a team-best 22 digs while Mosier rounded out a double-double with 11 digs.
Penn State Berks's Addie Parsons led all players with 18 kills while Cassidy Schultz added 10 kills in the win. Corrine Watson recorded a match-high 36 assists and Megan DeAbreu picked up 24 digs to lead the Nittany Lions to the win.
Keystone will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they visit Centenary College for a match scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
