Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 18th minute of Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game versus Mount Aloysius College to tie the score at 1-1, but the Mounties got a goal in the last minute of the first half and added two second half tallies to defeat host Keystone College, 4-1. The Mounties level their record at 2-2 on the season while the Giants slide to 0-3-1 on the year.
Mount Aloysius took a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute of Saturday's contest with their first shot of the game finding the back of the net. Jordan Gebhart took a free kick from midfield that skipped past Keystone goalkeeper
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, PA/Abington) and into the net to give the visitors the early lead.
Keystone leveled the game at 1-1 in the 18
th minute as Cortes netted the first goal of her collegiate career.
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) started the play with a long thru-ball to
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, NY/Stamford Central) who ripped a shot off the post. Cortes was the first to the rebound and pushed the ball over the goal-line to tie the score.
The game looked to be headed into halftime in a tie until Mounties' substitute Harpreeet Heer stole the ball from a Keystone defender in the box in ripped a shot in just beneath the crossbar with 58.8 seconds showing on the clock to give Mount Aloysius a 2-1 advantage at the intermission.
The visitors held an 8-7 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play while Keystone held a slim, 3-2 advantage in corner kicks in an evenly played first half.
The Mounties extended their lead to 3-1 in the 54
th minute. Kristlyn Dilbert fed a pass from the end-line back to Amanda Brancato, who fed a ball into the six-yard area where Kristin James flicked a shot past Heintz.
Mount Aloysius closed out the scoring with 2:04 left on the clock when Olivia Woodley scored a shot from the corner of the box that fell into the net set-netting at the back post to give the Mounties the three-goal advantage.
Despite the score line, the game was evenly played with both team attempting 17 shots with Keystone holding a narrow, 11-10 edge in shots on goal. The Giants also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Zara Apakoh made 10 saves in 90 minutes of action in goal for Mount Aloysius to pick up the win while Heintz was credited with six saves for the Giants.
Cortes and
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) each attempted a team-high five shots for Keystone while Ehrhart and
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) attempted a pair of shots each in the loss.
Keystone will be back in action on Wednesday evening with a non-conference game against Cazenovia College that is scheduled to kickoff at 5:00 p.m. on the Giants' turf field.
