Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, PA/Lackawanna Trail) scored 3:46 into the second period of overtime on Wednesday afternoon to give Keystone College a thrilling, 1-0 victory at Wells College in non-conference field hockey action. The Giants, who got 12 saves from
Amy Denmon (Beaumont, PA/Lake-Lehman) in the shutout win, improve to 1-4 with their first triumph of the season while dropping the Express to 2-4 on the fall.
Neither team was able to break through in the opening 35 minutes of play as Wells held a 7-1 advantage in shots in the first half. Denmon kept the Express off the board with three saves in the period while
Justine Firmstone (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) added a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
The hosts continued to hold the better of play in the second half, outshooting the Giants 9-0, but Denmon and Firmstone were again up to the task with the goalie making four stops and Firmstone adding her second defensive save of the game and seventh defensive save of the season to force overtime.
In the first 15-minute sudden death period, Keystone held a 5-4 edge in shots, but Denmon and Wells goalie Kendrick Wilson both made two stops apiece to send the game into a second overtime session.
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) nearly won the game for Keystone in the first minute of the second overtime, but Shelby Bourn made a defensive save for the Express to keep the game going. The Giants would end the game in the 89
th minute of play though after being a penalty corner, which
Genesis Pacheco (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) fed to Croasdale at the top of the circle where the sophomore blasted home the game-winner; her second goal of the season.
Wells finished the game with a 24-8 advantage in shots including a 14-4 edge in shots on target. The Express also generated 17 penalty corners to nine for Keystone.
Wilson finished the contest with two saves in the loss for the hosts.
Keystone will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday as they visit Immaculata University for a game scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Immaculata, Pennsylvania.
