La Plume, Pa. – Visiting Brooklyn College scored the final eight points of Sunday afternoon's non-conference men's basketball game at Keystone College to escape with a 75-67 victory over the Giants, who were playing their fourth game in seven days, at the Gambal Athletic Center. The Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the most recent national top-25 poll, lift their record to 13-3 overall while Keystone slips to 3-11 on the year.
The hosts built a 10-6 lead over the first four minutes of Sunday's contest before Brooklyn went on a quick, 6-0 run to claim a 12-10 edge at the 14:30 mark. The two teams battled within a single possession of one another over the next 10 minutes and were tied at 26-26 with 5:19 remaining in the stanza. The Bulldogs would hold a 40-30 lead at halftime after outscoring the hosts 14-4 over the final five minutes.
Brooklyn's Egzon Gjonbalaj posted a first half double-double, leading all players with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Jamel Gist added nine points for the Bulldogs, who shot 42.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play. The visitors also went 4-13 from three-point range and 4-7 from the free throw line.
James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) paced Keystone in the first half while
Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) added seven points and a team-leading six boards.
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) dished out three assists in the opening stanza for the Giants, who connected on 34.4 percent of their attempts from the floor in the period while going 4-14 from beyond the arc and 4-8 from the charity stripe.
Brooklyn extended their lead to 11 points early in the second half and held a 57-46 advantage with 10:43 remaining in regulation before Keystone embarked on a 15-2 run to claim a 61-59 advantage at the 6:46 mark when
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) connected on a pair of free throws. Monroe accounted for seven of the Giants' points during the run while Jones scored five points in the spurt.
A layup by Peeples gave Keystone a 67-64 edge with just under three minutes left to play, but the Bulldogs tied the contest with a three-pointer on the next possession before taking the lead for good, 68-67, when Lorenzo Williams went 1-2 from three free throw line with 54 seconds left on the clock. The visitors then forced a Keystone turnover which led to a layup and Brooklyn went 5-6 from the line in the final 39 seconds to seal the victory.
Gjonbalaj powered the visitors in the win with game-highs of 25 points, 18 rebounds, six steals, and two blocked shots to go along with a team-best three assists. Gist finished with 19 points for Brooklyn, who shot 38.2 percent from the field on the day while going 22.2 percent from long range and 64.7 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs held a 50-44 edge on the glass and were plus-five (12-17) in the turnover department.
Monroe led Keystone with 19 points while Jones finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a team-leading two steals. Peeples netted 11 points while dishing out a game-best four assists while Cooper was the fourth player for the Giants in double-figures with 10 points.
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) tied with Jones for the team-high in rebounding with nine boards on the day.
Keystone hit on 35.5 percent of their field goal attempts on the day and 33.3 percent of the three-point efforts. The Giants were a solid, 78.9 percent from the free throw line including a perfect, 11-11 showing in the second half.
The Giants will resume Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening as they host Centenary College. Opening tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. in the Gambal Center.
