Cyclones Hold Off Giants for 84-69 Win in CSAC Action

Cooper paces Keystone with 18 points in loss to Centenary

La Plume, Pa. - Visiting Centenary College built a 42-28 halftime lead and fended off a second half push by host Keystone College to pick up an 84-69 victory over the Giants in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Cyclones improve to 10-6 on the season and 6-3 in conference play while Keystone falls to 3-12 overall and 3-6 in the CSAC.

Centenary jumped out to a 15-6 lead over the first 4:12 of Wednesday contest but James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) followed up a Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) field goal with a three-pointer to bring Keystone to within three points at the 13:33 mark of the first half. The Cyclones countered the next seven points to open up a 22-11 advantage, but the Giants battled back to 28-23 when Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) converted a pair of free throws with 3:41 left in the opening half. Centenary closed the half on a 14-5 run to hold the 14-point advantage in the intermission.

Centenary's Rashaan Spencer led all players in the first half with 20 points while Myles McLeod scored eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Cyclones, who shot 45.7 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 4-11 from three-point range and 6-7 from the free throw line.

Cooper paced Keystone's offense with eight points while Williams and Monroe chipped in with five points apiece. Monroe corralled a team-best five rebounds in the half for the Giants, who connected on 26.3 percent of their attempts from the floor while going 2-11 from beyond the arc and 6-8 from the charity stripe.

Centenary extended their lead to 56-31 over the first 3:47 over the second half before Keystone battled back to within 11 points, 63-52, when Cooper and Monroe hit back-to-back treys for the Giants. The Cyclones pushed their advantage to as many as 15 points, but Monroe narrowed the host's deficit to 73-63 with 3:34 remaining by converting a layup. That would be as close as Keystone was able to come the rest of the way though as Centenary went 9-10 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to secure the win.

Spencer finished with a game-high 28 points for Centenary while McLeod recorded a double-double on 18 points and a game-best 21 rebounds. Deshawn Batts added 11 points for the Cyclones, who got a game-high four assists from Anthony Bailey. The visitors, who held a 53-44 advantage in rebounding, shot 42.9 percent from the field for the game, 30.8 percent from three-point territory, and a hot, 86.7 percent from the line.

Cooper posted a team-leading 18 points for Keystone while Monroe finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, a team-high three assists. Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) was the third player for the Giants in double-figures with 11 points, Williams added nine points and seven boards, and Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Rialto) chipped in with eight points. Jones led all players with three steals on the evening while Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) tied with Monroe for the team-lead in rebounding with eight caroms on the night for the Giants, who shot 32.5 percent from the field while going just 16.7 percent from beyond the arc and 61.1 percent from the stripe.
