La Plume, Pa. – The College at Old Westbury spoiled Keystone College's first game of the 2016 calendar year on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers defeated the Giants 89-46 in non-conference women's basketball action in the Gambal Athletic Center. Old Westbury extended their current winning streak to seven games while improving to 9-2 on the season while the Giants slip to 4-6 overall after suffering their third consecutive setback.
Leading 10-6 after three and a half minutes of play, the visiting Panthers rattled off 19 straight points and would hold a 29-9 lead after the first period as
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) halted Old Westbury's run with a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. The visitors netted the first six points of the second frame and went on to hold a 45-20 advantage at halftime.
Crystal Barnes led all scorers in the first half with 11 points for Old Westbury while Monique Joseph netted nine points in the opening 20 minutes of play for the Panthers, who shot 48.6 percent from the floor in the half while going 1-6 from three-point range and 8-11 from the free throw line.
Maddy Moro (Danville, PA/Danville Area) paced Keystone's offense with eight first half points while
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) chipped in four points for the Giants, who connected on 23.5 percent of the attempts from the floor over the first two periods while going 1-11 from downtown and 3-8 from the charity stripe.
The visitors pushed their lead to 34 points midway through the third quarter before taking a 70-32 lead into the final 10 minutes of play, where Old Westbury outscored Keystone 19-14 to close out the win.
Barnes finished with game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds to power the Panthers while Nikki Alexander also contributed a double-double on 10 points and 11 boards. Joseph added 14 points while Raven Pentz dished out five assists for Old Westbury, who finished the contest hitting on 47.3 percent of their shots from the floor while going 16.7 percent from beyond the arc and 70.8 percent from the line.
Old Westbury held a 61-39 advantage in rebounding for the game and were plus-four in the turnover department (20-24).
Hall's 17 points paced Keystone and the freshman added team-highs of three assists and two blocks. Moro also finished in double figures with 10 points for the Giants, who shot 21.5 percent from the field, 11.1 percent from three-point land, and 64 percent from the stripe.
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) and
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) tied for the team-lead with seven boards apiece while
Emily Hutton (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) collected a game-high three steals.
Keystone will resume Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening when they visit local rival Summit University. Opening tipoff against the Defenders is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Clarks Summit.
