Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) scored a pair of goals to lead Keystone College to a 2-1 victory over visiting Houghton College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants boost their record to 4-7 on the fall while snapping a four-game losing skid in the process and drop the Highlanders to 7-6 on the year.
Bain gave Keystone a 1-0 lead just 6:09 into Wednesday contest by scoring her eighth goal of the season from the center of the cage after taking a centering pass from
Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).
Houghton knotted the score in the 19
th minute when Tanya Hatton drove home a shot from the left side to the far post with Kelsie Ashley assisting on the tying goal.
The contest remained tied at one-apiece at halftime with the Highlanders holding a 7-5 edge in shots on goal while the Giants claimed a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-3 lead in penalty corners.
Both teams had opportunities to forge a lead in the second half, but it wasn't until the 61
st minute that Keystone took a 2-1 advantage.
Alissa Nugent (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) took the ball down the right flank before drilling a long cross to Bain, who tapped in the eventual game-winning goal from close range. The sophomore's tally was her team-leading ninth tally of the fall.
The Giants defense, led by
Amy Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin),
April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), and
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) stood tall to hold Houghton to just two more shots the rest of the way, both of which were turned aside by goalkeeper
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham).
Hawkins earned the win by making a game-high seven saves for Keystone.
Elizabeth Piszker turned aside four shots for the Highlanders while Marissa Hollinger added a defensive save in the first half for the visitors.
Houghton finished the contest with a 12-8 advantage in shots along with an 8-7 edge in shots on target. The Giants held lead in penalty corners, 6-4.
Keystone will host Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon in a crucial Colonial States Athletic Conference game starting at 12:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume. The contest will be a "Blue for Tashandra" game in memory of former Keystone student Tashandra Burton. Donations will be accepted with all proceeds going to the "Tashandra Burton Living Memorial Fund."
