La Plume, Pa. –
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) scored with 3:11 remaining in the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon to give Keystone College a crucial, 2-1 win over visiting Immaculata University in Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey action. The Giants improve to 5-7 on the fall and level their conference mark at 2-2 while the Mighty Macs fall to 5-11 on the season and 1-3 in the CSAC.
Immaculata took a 1-0 lead 5:50 into Saturday's contest. Nicole Dominick took a pair of shots from close range that were both saved by
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham), but Dominick punched home a rebound with her third attempt to put the Mighty Macs ahead.
Both teams had chances over the final 29 minutes of the first half, but Hawkins and Immaculata goalkeeper Sarah Pasternak were up to the task each time. Pasternak denied a rocket from the top of the circle of the stick of
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) to preserve the lead for Immaculata, who outshot Keystone by a 10-6 margin over the first 35 minutes of play.
The Giants leveled the contest in the 48
th minute of play when
Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) deflected in Croasdale's shot from the top of the circle, making it a 1-1 game with her fifth goal of the season. Croasdale's assist was her second helper of the fall.
Neither team was able to generate another goal over the final 22 minutes of play, sending Keystone to overtime for the second time this fall.
The Giants dominated the overtime session, taking all eight shots in the period and ending the contest on their sixth shot on goal. Paulson collected the ball in the circle on the right side of the Mighty Macs' cage and fed a crossing pass to Bain, who made no mistake on the game-winner in the 82
nd minute. The sophomore's tally was her team-leading 10
th of the season while Paulson's helper as her fourth of the fall, also a team-best.
Hawkins picked up her fourth win of the season after making a season-high 12 saves.
Pasternak suffered the loss despite making 20 saves in a solid effort in Immaculata's net.
Saturday's contest was a "Blue for Tashandra" game played in memory of former Keystone student Tashandra Burton, who tragically lost her life in an automobile accident in January. All proceeds from Saturday's event are going directly to the "Tashandra Burton Living Memorial Fund," a scholarship established in Tashandra's memory.
Keystone will play its final non-conference game of the season on Monday when it hosts Albright College starting at 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
