La Plume, Pa. – Visiting Neumann University scored in the 52
nd minute of Tuesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer match at Keystone College and made it stand in a 1-0 victory, snapping the Giants' winning streak at six games while dealing the hosts their first loss in conference play. The Knights improve to 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in conference play while dropping Keystone to 8-4-1 overall and 5-1 in the CSAC.
The loss drops Keystone into second place tie in the conference standings behind Centenary (16 points). The Giants level with Immaculata University with 15 points, but hold the head-to-head lead over the Mighty Macs by virtue of their 5-0 win over Immaculata earlier this season.
Keystone nearly went ahead in the 15
th minute, but
Angel Perez (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop) saw his header off of a corner kick bounce off the crossbar. The Giants had another great opportunity go by the wayside 10 minutes later as
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) broke free behind Neumann's backline only to have his shot hit the outside of the net.
The Knights had a good chance of their own in the 43
rd minute, but a headed shot hit the outside of the goalpost and the two sides went into halftime scoreless.
Keystone had the better of the possession in the opening 45 minutes of play, but the visitors held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half.
Neumann broke the deadlock 6:51 into the second half when Liam Hill played a long thru-ball to Jake McDevitt on the left side of the field. McDevitt took a few dribbles before slotting a shot to the far post from 10 yards out.
McDevitt's goal would stand as the game-winner despite several dangerous chances for Keystone, who was only able to direct one shot on target in the loss. The Giants saw several shot miss just wide of the target and the Giants were unable to get a foot on a
Frank Heter III (Andover, N.J./Newton) pass across the goalmouth with seven minutes remaining to knock the potential tying goal into the vacant net.
Neumann finished the game with a 14-11 edge in shots for the game while both sides struggled to put their attempts on frame, with the Knights collecting three of the game's four shots on goal. Keystone held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to capitalize on a number of quality restart chances.
Neumann's Shane Smith made just one save to pick up the shutout win while
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) turned aside a pair of shots in the loss for the Giants.
Keystone will next take on Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon in a CSAC contest starting at 12:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
