La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College outshot visiting Gwynedd Mercy University 26-6 in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon, but the Griffins led where it mattered most, stunning the Giants with a 2-1 victory. Gwynedd Mercy improves to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play with the win while the Giants slip to 8-5-1 on the fall and 5-2 in the CSAC.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Keystone honored the program's four seniors:
Nana Agyemang,
Aadil Mendez (Manhattan, N.Y./Pocono Mountain East),
Haris Sabovic (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley), and
Massimo Lahey (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East).
Keystone now sits in a four-way to for second place in the CSAC standings with Gwynedd Mercy, Cabrini University, and Immaculata University. All four sides have 15 points, four behind conference-leading Centenary University.
The Giants broke through in the 14
th minute by taking advantage of the game's first corner kick. Sabovic served the ball into the mix where
Jordan Vance (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) headed it down to
Angel Perez (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop) who had his shot blocked.
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) was there though to slam the rebound into the top of the net for his sixth goal of the season to give Keystone the 1-0 lead.
Keystone dominated play through the remainder of the half, but were unable to push across another goal despite holding 16-2 advantage in shots and Gwynedd Mercy scored late in the half against the run of play to send the game into halftime deadlocked at 1-1. Adam Stangler pounced on a misplay by Keystone in net following a long free kick served into the Giants' penalty area.
The Giants held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal in the half, but Griffins' goalkeeper Ryan Oyola made seven saves to keep the visitors in the game.
Perez nearly Keystone back in front in the 59
th minute, but Oyola made a great diving save to deny the freshman on a rocket from 25 yards out.
At the other end,
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) game up with a big save in the 76
th minute, leaping to parry a shot by the Griffins over the bar to keep the game tied at one.
Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of a late restart to take a 2-1 lead which would stand as the final score. The Griffins were awarded a free kick on the left flank near midfield which Cole Smith served into the Giants' box. The ball skipped through to Hunter Bishop who tapped the game-winning goal in from close range.
Oyola finished with 12 saves to pick up the win in net for Gwynedd Mercy, which had just three shots on goal in the contest.
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) played the first half in goal for Keystone without making a save while Heintz was credited with one save in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
The Giants finished the afternoon with an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks along with the 20-shot advantage. The hosts placed half of their 26 shots on target in the loss.
Keystone will host Centenary University on Wednesday afternoon in a CSAC tilt starting at 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
