La Plume, Pa. –
Andrew Lupinacci (Stratford, N.J./Sterling)'s first collegiate goal stood as the only tally on Wednesday afternoon as Keystone College dealt league-leading Centenary University its first Colonial States Athletic Conference loss as the Giants picked up a crucial, 1-0 victory in La Plume. Keystone improves to 9-5-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play while the Cyclones fall to 10-5-1 on the fall and 6-1-1 in the CSAC.
Keystone, who has already clinched a berth in the CSAC playoff berth for the third time in the last four seasons, will have its postseason seed determined by Saturday's regular season finale at Cabrini University along with other result around the conference.
Keystone had a quality scoring opportunity in the 17
th minute of Wednesday contest when
Abreham Kittel (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) struck a shot from the Cyclones' penalty area that forced Centenary goalkeeper Devon Warne to dive to his left to save. The Giants had another great chance in the 25
th minute, but Centenary defense blocked a shot from
Frank Heter III (Andover, N.J./Newton) in the center of the goalmouth.
Keystone finally broke through in the 38
th minute of the contest when Lupinacci scored the first goal of his collegiate career.
Haris Sabovic (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) started the scoring play by serving a dangerous free kick into the box where
Massimo Lahey (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) flicked it on to Lupinacci, who deposited it into an empty net from close range giving the Giants the 1-0 advantage.
The hosts held the one-goal edge at halftime along with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Centenary held a slim, 8-7 edge in total shot attempts over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Keystone had a golden opportunity to double its lead in the 52
nd minute when Sabovic escaped on a short breakaway, but Warne denied the Giants' leading scoring to keep the Cyclones within a goal.
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) came up big in net for Keystone with just under 15 minutes to play, diving to his left to stop a shot from 16 yards out from the Cyclones and pouncing on the rebound before a Centenary forward could arrive to knock home the rebound.
The Giants' defense, led by Lupinacci, Lahey,
Jalen Freeman (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional),
Jordan Vance (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), and substitute
Ciaran Ward (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), denied the visitors any good looks after that to give Keystone its fifth shutout of the season.
Heintz finished the afternoon with six saves to pick up third win of the fall and first solo clean sheet.
Warne made five stops in the loss for Centenary, which held a 16-10 lead in shots on goal for the game along with a 5-4 edge in corner kick chances.
Keystone closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Cabrini with opening kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
