La Plume, Pa. – Cabrini University held off a strong effort by host Keystone College on Tuesday afternoon, edging the Giants 2-1 in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Cavaliers level their overall record at 5-5 while moving to a perfect 4-0 in conference play while the Giants slip to 5-4-1 this fall and 2-2-1 in league action.
After Keystone had several good chances in the opening minutes of the game, Cabrini opened the scoring in the 21
st minute when Taylor Tralie tapped in a shot from close range after taking a crossing pass from Alex Garces with Allie Vallen also assisting on the tally.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 34
th minute when Leticia Sales picked up a loose ball in the Giants penalty area and slipped a pass to Katelyn Gillinger who fired home a shot from close range.
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) scoring on a fantastic strike with just 1:17 remaining in the first half to cut Keystone's deficit to 2-1 heading into half.
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) fed a pass to Richner and the freshman laced a long-range shot that clipped the bottom of the crossbar and went just across the goal-line. Richner's tally was her second of the season.
Both teams had several good looks at goal in the second half, but Keystone goalkeeper
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) made eight saves in the final 45 minutes to keep the Cavaliers from extending their lead. At the other end, Cabrini netminder Gabby LeGendre made a nice save on a shot by
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) of the potential game-tying goal in the 54
th minute while the Giants several shots just wide or high of the bar.
LeGendre picked up the win after totaling five saves on the afternoon. Keystone starter
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) was charged with the loss despite making five first half stops before Shepherd turned in the eight-save effort in the second stanza.
Cabrini outshot Keystone by a 23-10 margin for the game and had a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Cavaliers also generated nine corner kick chances to two for the Giants.
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central) led hosts with four shots in the game while
Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) attempted three shots including a pair that were stopped by LeGendre in the first half.
Keystone will be back in action on Saturday afternoon with a conference matchup at Cairn University. Opening kickoff between the Giants and Highlanders is set for 1:00 p.m. in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
