Langhorne, Pa. – A 16
th minute goal proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon as Cairn University edged Keystone College 1-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Highlanders improve to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play while the Giants slip to 5-5-1 this fall and 2-3-1 in league play.
Cairn broke through with just 15:05 elapsed in Saturday's contest when Meghan Wilson placed a shot from 10 yards out into the top left corner of Keystone's net for her ninth goal of the season.
Keystone held a 13-6 advantage in shots in the first half, but trailed at the break as Highlanders' goalkeeper Payton Emerick made eight saves in the opening 45 minutes of play to keep the hosts ahead.
The Giants continued to dominate play in the second half and outshot Cairn by a 10-3 margin, but were unable to solve Emerick, who denied
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) with just seven seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
Emerick finished with a game-high 12 saves to pick up the shutout win for the Highlanders.
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) made three saves in the first half in goal for Keystone while
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) made two saves in the second half.
Keystone held a 23-9 advantage in shots for the game and doubled up Cairn in shots on goal, 12-6. The Giants also held a 6-1 lead in corner kick chances on the day.
Richner led the Giants with six shots including five efforts on goal while
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, N.Y./New Paltz) attempted five shots.
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central) and
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) had four shots apiece in the loss for the visitors.
Keystone will return to the pitch on Wednesday night with a CSAC showdown against local rival Marywood University starting at 7:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
