Purchase, N.Y. – Marywood University topped local conference rival Keystone College 69-48 in the consolation game of the Manhattanville College Battle for the Castle Tournament on Sunday afternoon in upstate New York. The Pacers level their record at 1-1 on the year while the Giants slip to 1-3 on the young season.
Marywood built a 13-2 lead over the first 7:20 of Sunday's non-conference game and held a 19-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Pacers went on to outscore the Giants 22-9 in the second period to hold a 41-15 lead at halftime.
Natasha Hessling scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while Kylie Devlin netted nine points to lead Marywood, who shot 51.6 percent from the floor over the first two quarters including a 5-13 showing from three-point range.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) led Keystone's offense with eight points while
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) added four points for the Giants, who shot just 17.9 percent from the field while going 1-6 from beyond the arc and 4-6 from the free throw line in the first half.
Keystone narrowed its deficit to 20 points with 2:44 remaining in the third stanza, but Marywood would take a 57-31 lead into the final 10-minute period after both teams netted 16 points apiece in the third quarter. The Giants outscored the Pacers 17-12 in the final 10 minutes of play, but were unable to pull any closer than to within 18 points.
Hessling finished with a game-high 15 points for Marywood while Devlin added 14 points and Gab Giordano added 12 points and a game-high six assists.
The Pacers finished the afternoon connecting on 48.3 percent of their field goal attempts including a 36.4 percent effort from long range while going 5-10 from the free throw line.
Hodanich, who was named to the All-Tournament Team following the contest, and
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) tied for the Keystone team-lead with 10 points apiece. Hodanich led the squad with seven rebounds and four assists while
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) picked up a game-high six steals.
Sugalski and
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, Md./Walkersville) corralled five boards apiece as the Giants held a35-34 edge on the glass for the contest.
Keystone finished the afternoon shooting 33.3 percent from the floor, 40 percent from three-point land, and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe.
The Giants will visit The College at Old Westbury on Tuesday night for a non-conference tilt starting at 6:00 p.m. in Upstate New York.
