La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's women's basketball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a 63-48 victory over visiting Cedar Crest College on Wednesday evening in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Giants lifted their record to 2-5 (1-0 CSAC) and snapped a five-game losing skid while dropping the Falcons to 2-2 (0-1 CSAC) on the year.
Cedar Crest built a 13-4 lead over the first 4:37 of Wednesday night's contest, but Keystone scored six of the final eight points of the first quarter to cut its deficit to 15-10 at the end of the first period.
The Giants took a 19-17 lead at the 6:59 mark of the second quarter on an
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) jumper and used 10-2 run to open up a 29-20 lead before taking a seven-point advantage into the locker room at halftime after the Falcons scored the final field goal of the stanza.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) led Keystone with six points while getting four points from four other players.
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) paced the squad with five rebounds as the Giants shot 34.4 percent from the field in the half while going 7-10 from the free throw line.
Sylera Weller and Sienne Kemmerer netted six points apiece to lead Cedar Crest, who shot 40 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Falcons cut their deficit to two points early in the second half before Keystone rattled off a 13-2 run that pushed their lead to 42-29 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Giants held a 46-36 advantage heading into the final period.
Cedar Crest pulled to within eight points at 49-41 with 6:43 left in regulation, but Keystone put the game away by scoring 14 of the game's next 16 points, opening up a 20-point cushion before closing out the 15-point victory.
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) finished with a game-high 15 points for Keystone and was joined in double-figures by Hodanich (13) and
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) (10). Sugalski led the Giants with 10 rebounds, Hodanich and Hutton handed out three assists apiece while Elysee collected a game-high three steals.
The hosts finished the evening hitting on 43.5 percent of their field goal attempts while going 1-5 from three-point range and 8-14 from the free throw line. The Giants also held a 44-35 advantage in rebounding for the game and were plus-two (18-20) in the turnover department.
Kemmerer and Taylor Osley scored 12 points apiece for Cedar Crest while Weller finished with 11 points on the evening. The Falcons shot 34.2 percent from the floor, 25 percent from long distance, and 50 percent from the charity stripe in the loss.
Keystone will travel to Rosemont College on Saturday afternoon for a CSAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
