Men’s Basketball Defeats Playoff-Bound Cyclones, 81-67

Williams scores a career-high 27 points; Jones finishes two assists shy of a triple-double

Hackettstown, N.J. - Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) scored a season-high 27 points and Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) finished two assists shy of a triple-double to lead Keystone College to an 81-67 victory over playoff-bound Centenary College in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday evening. The Giants outscored the Cyclones 48-31 in the second half to snap a six-game losing skid to improve to 5-19 on the season and 5-12 in conference play.

Centenary, who is battling for home-court advantage in the first round of the CSAC playoffs, falls to13-11 on the year including a 9-8 mark in the CSAC after Keystone avenged an 84-69 setback suffered to the Cyclones in the prior meeting between the two teams this season on January 20 in La Plume.

The first half of Wednesday's contest was tightly contested as neither team was able to build a lead greater than two possessions. A.J. Newell (Hackensack, NJ/Hawthorne Christian Academy) gave Keystone the largest lead of the half with 4:33 remaining on the clock when his three-pointer put the Giants ahead 29-23, but Centenary outscored the visitors 13-4 over the final four minutes of the half to hold a 36-33 edge at the break.

Myles McLeod led all players with 12 points in the opening stanza while Zachary Duymich added seven pints for Centenary, who connected on 36.8 percent of their shots from the floor in the first half including a 2-9 effort from three-point land.

Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) led Keystone with five first half points while Jones, ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello), and Eric Hardaway (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) each chipped in with four points in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Giants shot 40 percent from the field in the first frame while going 5-15 from beyond the arc.

The Cyclones tallied the first six points of the second half to build a 42-33 lead, but Keystone battled back and used a 12-0 run to claim a 61-53 advantage with 8:19 remaining in regulation. Centenary rallied and took a brief, one-point advantage with just over six minutes left, but Williams hit a pair of free throws followed by a Terrence Bowman (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) trey that ignited a decisive, 16-2 burst by the Giants that gave the visitors final control with 78-65 lead with 1:21 left on the clock.

Williams's 27 points came on an 11-18 shooting night including one three-pointer and four made free throws. Monroe added 13 points while Jones recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists to post his first collegiate double-double for the Giants. Williams added eight boards while Monroe added six caroms and two steals for the visitors, who shot 47.1 percent from the field on the evening including a 36 percent showing from three-point range and a 42.9 percent effort at the line.

Drayton and Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) chipped in with six points apiece for Keystone, who held a 48-37 advantage on the glass on the night while Centenary was plus-three (14-17) in the turnover department.

McLeod and Duymich paced Centenary's offense with 17 points apiece while Anthony Bailey tied with Jones for the game-high with 11 rebounds for the Cyclones, who hit on 37.3 percent of their field goal attempts including a 22.2 percent showing from long distance. The hosts shot 76.5 percent from the charity stripe in the loss.

Keystone will close out the 2015-16 season on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC matchup against local rival Marywood University in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume. The Giants will honor the team's seniors prior to tipoff, which is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
