Knights Down Giants in Conference Opener in La Plume

Silas makes 12 saves in Keystone’s cage; Hawkins and Yaeger add goals in defeat

La Plume, Pa. – Visiting Neumann University scored 15 first half goals on their way to a 19-2 victory over Keystone College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action opener for both sides on Tuesday afternoon.  The Knights level their overall record at 2-2 (1-0 CSAC) on the season while the Giants fall to 1-1 (0-1 CSAC) on the spring.

Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), who made her first career start in goal for Keystone, made 12 saves on the day, the second-most in the program's young history.

Neumann took a 2-0 lead over the first three and a half minute of Wednesday's contest before Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) cut the Giants' deficit in half with an unassisted goal at the 25:30 mark.  The Knights responded by scoring the final 13 goals of the first half to hold a 15-1 advantage after 30 minutes of play.

Aileen Yaeger (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) netted Keystone's second goal of the game just 40 seconds into the second half, but the Knights potted the final four tallies of the afternoon to close out the scoring.

Jordan Hopkins led Neumann with seven points on three goals and four assists, Rebecca Dolenti added four goals and one helper, and Taylor Klever scored four goals for the Knights, who held a 38-3 advantage in shots to go along with a 39-21 edge in groundballs.  The visitors, who got one save from winning goalie Becca Wallace, also controlled 19 of the game's 22 draws.

Hawkins tied for a game-high with five groundballs and four caused turnovers while Kayla Bain (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) scooped up four groundballs for the Giants.  Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, MD/Walkersville), Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), and Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) picked up a pair of groundballs each while Hodanich paced Keystone with two draw controls.

The Giants will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday when they visit Immaculata University for a CSAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
