Immaculata, Pa. – Immaculata University built a 13-5 lead at halftime of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game and pulled away with a 20-9 victory. The Mighty Macs level their overall record at 3-3 on the season and improve to 2-0 in conference play while the Giants fall to 1-2 this spring and 0-2 in the CSAC.
Immaculata opened the scoring 47 seconds into Saturday's contest before
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 26:04 mark. The Mighty Macs countered with the game's next seven goals before Hawkins netted her second tally of the game with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half to cut the score to 8-2. The hosts scored the next two goals before
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) score Keystone's third goal and after another Immaculata goal,
Aileen Yaeger (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) scored to trim the Giants' deficit to 11-4 with 7:52 showing on the clock.
The Mighty Macs sandwiched a pair of goals are a strike from
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) to give Immaculata the 13-5 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Following the intermission, the sides traded a pair of goals each with Hodanich nabbing both Keystone tallies, to bring the score to 15-8 with 24:40 remaining in regulation, but the Mighty Macs put the game out of reach with a five-goal run. Hawkins closed out the scoring by her fourth goal of the game with just over 10 minutes to play.
Hannah Verrecchi scored five goals and had two assists to lead Immaculata, Rosemarie Reitman added four goals and one assist, and Nicole Dominick and Shannon Neill added hat tricks to lead the Mighty Mac, who got three saves from winning goalie Christine McIntyre.
Hawkins led Keystone with five points on four goals and one assist while Hodanich netted three goals to go along with one helper. Yaeger also recorded a multi-point effort with a goal and an assist for the Giants, who got eight saves in goal from
Amber Crews (Plainfield, NJ/Central Jersey College Prep ).
Hawkins added four draw controls and three caused turnovers while Hodanich forced a pair of giveaways by the Mighty Macs. Hodanich and Yaeger contributed three draw controls each on the day. Hawkins also paced the squad with six groundballs, Hodanich scooped up three groundballs, and Crews and
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) chipped in with a pair of draw controls each in the loss.
Immaculata held a 38-15 advantage in shots for the game and won the groundball battle by a 25-16 margin. The Mighty Macs also held a 21-10 advantage in draw controls in the contest.
Keystone returns home on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference game against Lancaster Bible College that will start at 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
