La Plume, Pa. – Lancaster Bible College outscored Keystone College 15-4 in the second half of Tuesday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game to pull away with a 26-18 victory in a high-scoring affair. The Chargers improve to 3-2 on the season while the Giants, who set a new program record for goals scored in a game in the loss, fall to 1-3 overall.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scored six goals,
Aileen Yaeger (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had four goals and two assists, and
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) netted five goals to lead Keystone, who also got a pair of tallies from
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin).
Keystone scored the first four goals of Tuesday's contest before Lancaster Bible went on an 8-2 run to claim an 8-6 lead midway through the first half. The Giants got back-to-back goals from Hawkins and Yaeger, the latter assisted by
Emily Hutton (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union), to knot the game at nine-apiece. Keystone built a 13-10 lead and would hold a 14-11 advantage at halftime as Hodanich scored just before the horn sounded.
The Chargers netted the first three goals of the second stanza to tied the contest before Hodanich briefly put Keystone back in front. Lancaster Bible countered with another three-goal spurt before
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) cut the Giants' deficit to 17-16 with 19 minutes left in regulation. The visitors again used a three--goal run to open up a 20-16 lead before Hodanich halted the Chargers' run at the 12:26 mark. Lancaster Bible closed out the victory though by scoring six of the game's final seven goals.
Alyssa Wesner powered Lancaster Bible with 16 points on 11 goals and five assists, Myranda Kemrer tallied six goals and one helper, and Naomi Otis scored six times in the victory.
Lancaster Bible netminder Nicolette Statuti picked up the win after turning in a 12-save performance while
Amber Crews (Plainfield, NJ/Central Jersey College Prep ) made 15 saves in Keystone's cage in the loss.
Yaeger led the Giants with seven groundballs,
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) picked up four groundballs, while
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin), Hodanich, and
Kelly Smith (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) scooped up three groundballs apiece. Yaeger also led the squad with four caused turnovers while
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) and
Kelly Smith (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) both forced three turnovers. Hawkins paced the hosts with five draw controls while
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) chipped in with four draw controls.
Lancaster Bible held a 51-37 advantage in shots for the game and held a slim, 33-31 edge in groundballs. The Chargers also won the fight for draw controls by a 32-13 margin while committing one more turnover (25) than did the Giants (24).
Keystone returns home next Tuesday afternoon with a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup against Cedar Crest College that will start at 4:00 p.m. in La Plume.
