La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College built a 14-2 halftime lead and cruised to a 19-8 victory over Cedar Crest College on Tuesday afternoon as the Giants notched their first-ever conference win. Keystone, who was led by eight points from
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) and seven from
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), improves to 2-3 on the season while leveling their CSAC record at 1-1.
Hawkins netted seven goals and one assist while Hodanich had three goals and four helpers to lead the Giants, who got a goal and three assists from
Aileen Yaeger (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford).
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) and
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) scored two goals apiece while
Valeria Lemus (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson) contributed a goal and an assists in the win.
Keystone raced out to a 9-0 lead over the first 15:20 of Tuesday's contest before Cedar Crest (0-7, 0-3 CSAC) got on the board at the 14:23 mark.
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, MD/Walkersville) and Hawkins netted back-to-back goals to give the Giants an 11-1 advantage before the Falcons tallied their second goal of the game. Keystone got goals from Hawkins,
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic), and Lemus to close the half and take a 14-2 lead into the intermission.
Cedar Crest sandwiched a pair of goals around
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area)'s first goal of the season early in the second half before Keystone used a three-goal spurt to open up an 18-4 advantage. The Falcons got another goal back at the 17:40 mark before Smith closed out the scoring for Keystone with 12:14 showing on the clock. The visitors accounted for the final score by netting the final three goals of the contest.
Yaeger led the Giants with six groundballs while Hodanich scooped up five groundballs in the win. Hawkins led the way with seven draw controls, Hodanich had a game-high four caused turnovers, while Yaeger and Nolen chipped in with a pair of caused turnovers each.
Amber Crews (Plainfield, NJ/Central Jersey College Prep ) picked up the win in Keystone's cage by turning aside three shots on the day.
Regina Gill scored four goals to lead Cedar Crest while Alexandra Zoda netted three goals for the Falcons, who got 15 saves from Desiree Lewis in net.
Keystone held a 39-11 advantage in shots for the game and won the groundball battle, 32-17. The Giants also held a slight edge in draw controls, 15-12 while forcing Cedar Crest into twice as many turnovers on the afternoon, 30-15.
Keystone will make the short trip to Scranton on Saturday to take on Marywood University in a CSAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
