Aurora, N.Y. –
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) scored the game-tying goal with just 4:20 remaining in regulation to help Keystone College battle back to earn a hard-fought, 1-1 tie while playing a man down at Wells College in the season-opening non-conference men's soccer game for both sides on Thursday evening.
Chances were at a premium for both teams over the opening 40 minutes, but Wells (0-0-1) got a huge break in the first half when Keystone starting goalkeeper
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) was sent off for impeding a clear scoring chance for the Express. The hosts were awarded a penalty kick on the play, which was converted by Christian Garavito to give Wells a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Despite playing a man down and trailing by a goal, Keystone (0-0-1) persevered and were able to level the contest in the 86
th minute when
Massimo Lahey (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) played the ball across the box to Kouadio, who was there to finish of the play and knot the score at 1-1.
Wells had the better of play in the first 10 minute overtime period, outshooting Keystone 5-0, but Giants' goalkeeper
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) made a pair of big saves to keep the game going.
The game shifted back in Keystone's favor in the second period of extra time as the Giants held a 4-1 edge in shots, but efforts by
Angel Perez (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop) and
Michael Nyarko (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) were both denied by Express netminder Owen May, who finished the evening with five saves.
Moreira also made five stops on the evening in his collegiate debut to help Keystone come away with the draw.
Both teams were credited with 15 shots apiece including six efforts on target each while Wells held a 10-7 edge in corner kick chances.
Keystone will play its home opener on Sunday afternoon against the College of New Rochelle. First kick is slated for 2:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
