Haris Sabovic (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) record a goal and an assist apiece while
Jordan Vance (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) netted the eventual game-winning goal to lead Keystone College to a 3-0 victory over the Pennsylvania College of Technology in the Giants' home opener on Tuesday night. Keystone improves to 1-0-1 on the season while the Wildcats remain winless in three contests.
The Giants took advantage of the game's first corner kick opportunity for either side in the 15
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Sabovic lofted an out-swinging ball just outside the six-yard back that Vance drove into the top part of the net with a powerful header from six yards out to give the hosts the early edge.
Keystone had a multiple quality chances to extend their lead, but Penn goalkeeper Malcolm Kane made several outstanding saves while the Giants also pushed several shots just wide of the post. The hosts were forced to settle for the one-goal edge at halftime despite holding a 14-2 advantage in shots including an 8-0 edge in shots on goal over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Keystone need just over three minutes of play in the second half to double its lead. In the 49
th minute, Kouadio had a shot saved by Kane, but collected his own rebound and calmly laid a ball back to Sabovic, who finished a shot from 10 yards to the back post to give the Giants the 2-0 edge.
The Giants tacked on a third goal in the 80
th minute when Kouadio and
Ibrahim Tounkara (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) played a quick give and go at the top of the box that send Kouadio in where sophomore finished to the near post for his second goal of the season.
Keystone held a 24-7 advantage in shots for the game and placed 12 efforts on target to just three for the Wildcats. Giants' goalkeeper
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) earned his first collegiate victory and shutout by stopping all three shots that the visitors placed on frame.
Kane finished with nine saves in a solid outing in goal for the Wildcats.
Keystone, who also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks against Penn, returns to the pitch this weekend at the TCNJ Adidas Classic hosted by the College of New Jersey. The Giants will play the host Lions on Saturday before meeting Rutgers-Newark on Sunday. Both contests will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. in Ewing, New Jersey.
