Ewing, N.J. – Rutgers-Newark scored in the eighth minute of Sunday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game against Keystone College and added two more in the second half to defeat the Giants 3-0 on the final day of the TCNJ Adidas Classic. The Scarlet Raiders move to 5-1 on the season while the Giants slide to 1-2-1 overall.
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) turned in another strong performance in goal for Keystone, making nine saves a day after turning aside 12 shots in a 1-0 setback to the College of New Jersey. Moreira and
Rolando Rodriguez (Linden, N.J./Linden) were named to the TCNJ Adidas Classic All-Tournament Team for their performaces over the weekend.
Rutgers-Newark opened the scoring with just 7:53 elapsed on Sunday afternoon as Isiah Kuris collected a rebound off the crossbar and put it home to give the Scarlet Raiders the early edge. Keystone nearly equalized in the 19
th minute, but
Jalen Freeman (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) saw his shot go off the goalpost. Rutgers-Newark held the one-goal edge at halftime along with a 13-1 advantage in shots, but Moreira made five saves to keep Keystone within a goal.
The Scarlet Raiders pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 62
nd minute when Fabio De Sousa took a pass from Dylan Elias and fired home a shot from 16 yards. Rutgers-Newark closed out the scoring in the 73
rd minute when Timothy Farias ripped a shot from the left side into the upper corner of the net.
Andres Medina was credited with the shutout in goal for the Scarlet Raiders without being forced to make a save as Rutgers-Newark held a 28-2 advantage in shots for the game along with an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
Freeman and
Thiago Pinheiro (Curitiba, Brazil/Corona Del Sol) accounted for Keystone's two shots in the game and the Giants were denied additional scoring opportunities by being whistled for offsides four times on the day.
Keystone returns to action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference game at the University of Valley Forge. Opening kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
