La Plume, Pa. –
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) scored her first two goals of the season and
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) made 10 saves to lead Keystone College to a 2-0 victory over visiting Wesley College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants lift their record to 2-3 on the season with their second straight shutout while the Wolverines fall to 1-4 on the year.
Wesley held the territorial advantage of play in the beginning of the first half, but Keystone kept the Wolverines at bay and was able to generate several quality scoring chances with Bain being denied by Wesley goalkeeper Bridget Wood twice from close range before
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) put a shot just wide on a fast break attack for the Giants.
Bain finally broke the deadlock with just 1:34 remaining in the first half, solving Wood by deflecting in a pass from
April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) at the back post to give Keystone the 1-0 edge. The hosts held the one-goal advantage at halftime thanks to the sophomore's first goal of the season and six saves from Hawkins.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but Hawkins made four big saves to keep Keystone in front and Bain iced the win by placing a shot just inside the far post after a long breakaway down the left side with just 2.2 seconds remaining on the clock.
Alissa Nugent (Chestertown, Md./Kent County),
Amy Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), and
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) had strong defensive games to help lead the Giants to hold their opponent scoreless for the second game in a row while Hawkins was there to stop all 10 of Wesley's shots on goal.
Keystone finished the afternoon with a 19-14 advantage in shots including a 12-10 edge in shots on goal. Wesley held a slim, 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Wood made eight saves in the first half for the Wolverines while Sidney Knott turned aside a pair of shots in the second frame for the visitors.
Keystone will be off until Saturday, September 24 when it opens conference play at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Start time between the Giants and Gators is set for 2:30 p.m. in Baltimore, Maryland.
