La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College gave visiting Cabrini University all it could handle in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon, but the Cavaliers remained unbeaten in league play with a 59-48 victory over the Giants in the Gambal Athletic Center. Cabrini improves to 9-7 on the year including a perfect 7-0 mark in the CSAC while the Keystone slips to 5-10 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Keystone jumped out to a fast start on Saturday, closing the first quarter with a 10-3 run to hold at 17-10 advantage at the end of the opening 10 minute stanza.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) drained a trio of three-pointers in the period to help the Giants build the seven-point advantage.
Cabrini rallied in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts by an 18-4 margin to hold a 28-21 halftime advantage.
Renee Oliver and Kate Skalski led a balanced offense for Cabrini in the first half with Oliver pulling down seven boards. The Cavaliers shot 37.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play including a 2-8 showing from three-point range and a 4-6 effort from the free throw line.
Hodanich paced Keystone with nine points of the first two quarters while
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) and
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) chipped in with four points each.
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) pulled down four boards for the Giants, who connected on 27.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the half while going 3-6 from long distance and perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe.
Cabrini extended its lead to 41-28 over the first four minutes of the third quarter before Keystone countered with an 8-2 run to pull to within seven points. The Cavaliers would go back up by as many as 11 points before taking a 47-40 edge into the final stanza.
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) scored on a layup with 5:54 remaining in regulation to pull Keystone to within eight points, but Cabrini responded with the game's next seven points to claim a 57-42 advantage with 3:45 remaining. The Giants scored six of the game's final eight points, but were unable to overcome the visitor's 15-point advantage.
Erin Dodds powered Cabrini with a game-high 17 points while Oliver finished with a double-double on 10 points a game-best 12 rebounds, who shot 36.1 percent from the field on the day including a 3-16 effort from beyond the arc to go along with a 12-14 showing at the line.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) came off the bench to lead Keystone with 14 points while Hodanich added nine points and four assists. Garrett netted seven points on the day and Sugalski chipped in with six points. Sugalski, Williams, and Zuchowski tied with six rebounds apiece for the Giants, who held a 41-39 edge on the glass in the loss.
For the game, the hosts shot 30.9 percent from the floor while going 3-14 from downtown and a solid, 11-12 from the stripe.
Keystone will be back in action on Wednesday evening with a CSAC tilt at Centenary University starting at 6:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
