Hackettstown, N.J. – Keystone College reached the century mark for the second time this season, but it wasn't enough as the Giants dropped an overtime thriller at Centenary University, falling to the Cyclones 106-101 in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action. Centenary boosts its record to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the CSAC with the win while the Giants slip to 5-10 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Centenary used an 11-1 run midway through the first half to open up a 21-11 lead before Keystone rallied to take 24-23 edge with just under five minutes remaining in the first half when
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) completed a three-point play. The two teams traded the lead four times the rest of the stanza with
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ) giving the Giants a 36-35 edge at halftime by connecting on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) led all players with 16 points in the first half for Keystone while Belcher grabbed six rebounds. The Giants held the one-point lead at halftime after shooting 38.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 2-11 from three-point range and 14-18 from the free throw line.
The Cyclones, who were paced by Jack Logue's 11 points in the first half, connected on 33.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the stanza while going 4-13 from downtown and 3-5 from the charity stripe.
Keystone extended its lead to as many as nine points midway through the second half, but Centenary chipped away and tied the score at 77-77 with five minutes remaining in regulation. The hosts briefly went ahead, but Gilliam hit a deep three-pointer with 43 seconds remaining to give the Giants a 87-86 edge.
Centenary answered with a long trey of their own on their next possession to put the hosts up by two, but the Gilliam scored on a layup with 11 ticks left to level the game at 89-apiece and the Giants got a huge defensive stop to force to overtime.
Keystone took a 95-92 lead two minutes into overtime when Belcher hit the front end of a pair of free throws, but Centenary used a 13-4 run to take control of the game, building a 105-99 advantage in the final 10 seconds of the contest.
Rashaan Spencer led the Cyclones with 31 points while Logue (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Paul Jones (19 points, 12 rebounds) adding double-doubles with Jones falling one assist shy of a triple-double. Zachary Duymich chipped in with 15 points for Centenary, who finishing the night shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from long distance, and 66.7 percent from the line.
Gilliam tied for a game-high with 31 points for Keystone while Belcher and Monroe had 16 points apiece.
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) totaled 13 points and blocked a pair of shots while Belcher rounded out a double-double with 13 boards to go along with a team-leading five assists.
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) pulled down seven boards for the Giants.
The visitors finished the evening hitting on 47.1 percent of their field goal attempts while going 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 64.9 percent from the stripe.
Keystone returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon against Rosemont College in a CSAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
