Bryn Athyn, Pa. – Bryn Athyn College outscored visiting Keystone College 15-7 in the third quarter of Wednesday evening's non-conference women's basketball contest to take control on its way to a 51-44 victory. The Lions, who held three-point edge at halftime, improve to 14-3 on the season while the Giants slide to 5-15 overall.
Bryn Athyn scored the first 11 points of Monday night's contest and held a 13-4 advantage at the end of the first period. Keystone scored the first six points of the second stanza to make it a three-point game, but the Lions pushed their 13 points with 1:45 remaining in the period. The Giants came back with 10 unanswered points to close out the frame as Bryn Athyn held a 27-24 edge at halftime.
Sarah Elizabeth Atunrase and Brittany Vick led Bryn Athyn with six points apiece for the hosts, who shot 42.9 percent from the floor in opening 20 minutes of play.
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) tallied six points apiece to pace Keystone while
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) added five points as the Giants connected on 23.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the first two quarters.
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) made it a two-point game by converting a jumper early in the third quarter, but Bryn Athyn used a 12-0 run to open up a 40-26 lead with three minutes remaining in the period before taking a 42-31 lead into the final 10-minute stanza.
The Giants narrowed their deficit to seven points with 3:03 left in regulation on a three-pointer from Hodanich, but that would mark the end of the scoring as the two teams combined to go 0-7 from the field in the final three minutes.
Kristina Clark finished with a game-high 14 points for Bryn Athyn while Atunrase (11) and Amber Farnholz (10) pulled down double-digit rebounds to help the hosts to a 51-36 advantage on the glass for the game. Clark also led all players with six assists for the Lions, who finishing the night hitting on 40.4 percent of their efforts from the field while going 2-14 from three-point range and 7-10 from the free throw line.
Hodanich led Keystone with 12 points while Williams finished with nine points to go along with team-highs of seven rebounds and three assists.
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) led all players with five steals while
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) collected four takeaways as the Giants were plus-nine in the turnover department (16-25).
For the game, the visitors went 24.3 percent from the field including a tough, 2-22 showing from long range while making six of nine free throw shots.
Keystone will look to snap a seven-game losing skid when it resumes Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday at home against Rosemont College. Opening tip between the Giants and Ravens is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
