La Plume, Pa. – Marywood University outscored Keystone College 41-20 over the middle two quarters of Thursday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball game in the Gambal Athletic Center on its way to a 66-46 victory. The Pacers climb above the .500 mark at 7-6 overall while dropping the Giants to 4-8 on the season. Both teams now sport 3-1 records in conference play as Keystone suffered its first CSAC defeat.
Keystone scored the first four points of a low-scoring opening stanza and would hold a 13-8 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play. Marywood outscored the Giants 12-4 over the first 6:16 of the second period and took a 27-22 edge into halftime
Gab Giordano led all scorers with 10 points to go along with six rebounds in the first half for Marywood, who shot 31.3 percent from the field while going 0-10 from three-point range. The Pacers were solid at the free throw line, going 7-8 in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) paced Keystone with eight first half points while
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) tallied six points. Hodanich and
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) added four boards for the Giants, who connected on 31 percent of their attempts from the field in the first to stanza while going 2-7 from beyond the arc and 2-4 from the charity stripe.
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to pull Keystone to within two points, but Marywood responded with a 9-2 run to open up a 36-27 advantage. After the Giants pulled to within six points, the Pacers used a 17-1 burst to close the frame and take a 49-33 lead into the final 10-minute frame.
The hosts cut their deficit to 14 points early in the fourth period, but Marywood pulled away to secure the 20-point victory.
Giordano finished with a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists for Marywood while Catie Nealon added 14 points. Lisa Steakin pulled down a team-best eight rebounds for the Pacers, who held a 46-30 advantage on the glass for the game. Erika Thomas added four helpers for the visitors, who shot 40 percent from the field on the day while going 16.7 percent from long range and 75 percent from the line.
Garrett and Elysee paced Keystone with 13 points apiece while Hodanich totaled eight points. Williams blocked three shots while Elysee and
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) collected a trio of steals apiece for the Giants, who hit on 30.2 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from downtown, and 69.2 percent from the stripe.
Keystone will host Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday afternoon in a CSAC tilt starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
