La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College kept its postseason hopes alive on Saturday afternoon by upsetting visiting Cabrini University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey game. The Giants, who got goals from
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) and
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) along with nine saves from
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham), improve to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in league play while dropping the Cavaliers to 6-8 this fall and 4-2 in the CSAC.
Keystone currently sits in a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot with Cedar Crest College and Marywood University with the Falcons holding the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over both teams. Those three squads sit one game back of both Cabrini and Immaculata who have 4-2 records in conference play.
The Giants will need to defeat Marywood in Wednesday's regular season finale and hope for a Cedar Crest loss to Neumann University in their final game on Wednesday. Additional tie-breakers could come into play if Cabrini and Immaculata lose in their last contests of the regular season.
Keystone took a 1-0 lead just 3:36 into Saturday's contest as Bain got behind Cabrini's defense on a breakaway on a pass from Robinson before stick-handling around the Cavaliers' goalkeeper and depositing her fourth goal of the season into the back of the cage.
Cabrini leveled the contest at 1-1 in the 11
th minute when Sara Johnsen took a short feed from Maddy Worley and fired home a shot from close range.
Cabrini outshot Keystone by a 17-1 margin in the first 35 minutes of play and held a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners, but Hawkins made six saves in the opening half to keep the score level at one-apiece.
Despite being outplayed for majority of the game, Keystone was able to tally the only goal of the second half in the 43
rd minute as Robinson gained control of a loose ball at the top of the visitors circle and turned and fired a shot past Cabrini goalkeeper Taylor Bookman for her team-leading ninth strike of the year.
The Giants' defense, led by
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who picked up her third defensive save of the fall in the contest, along with
Amy Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin),
April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), and
Taylor Cercone (Dallas, Pa./Lake Lehman) stood tall over the final 27:44 to preserve the win while Hawkins added three more stops in the second half.
Bookman made four saves in goal for Cabrini, who outshot the Giants 26-8 while holding an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Cavaliers also generated 17 penalty corner chances to just three for the hosts.
Keystone will honor the team's seniors prior to Wednesday's conference showdown with Marywood which is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in La Plume.
