La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College won its second straight five-set match on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Elmira College 3-2 in non-conference volleyball action in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Giants improve to 11-15 overall while dropping the Soaring Eagles to 18-11 this fall.
Prior to Wednesday's match, Keystone honored
Nicki Yeager (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and
Shannon Monahan (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) who are closing out their careers for the Giants before graduation.
Elmira won the opening set of Tuesday evening's match by a 25-20 margin before Keystone leveled the contest with a 25-23 decision in the second frame. The Giants took a 2-1 advantage by hanging on for a 26-24 victory in game three, but the Soaring Eagles took the fourth set 25-15 to send the match to a deciding fifth game.
Keystone rebounded in the fifth set and prevailed with a 15-12 win in the fifth set just three days after defeating Manhattanville College in five sets to improve to 2-3 in five-set matches this season.
Nicole Frascati (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) and
Amanda Hardy (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) totaled 14 kills apiece while
Malley Bowen (Owego, N.Y./Tioga Central) put down eight kills to go along with a team-high 40 assists and three aces to pace Keystone's attack.
Victoria Homfeld (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) led four Giants in double-figures for digs with 18,
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) picked up 17 digs, Bowen had 11 digs, and Yeager picked up 10 digs in the win.
Monahan tied for a match-high with four blocks for Keystone, which hit .155 as a team on the evening.
Natalie Schieder paced Elmira with 20 kills and 23 digs while Tiara John and Lauren Smith added 12 kills apiece as the visitors hit .210 as a team in the loss.
Taylor Kaznowski dished out a match-high 48 assists while Kasey Campbell led all players with five aces in the contest for the Soaring Eagles.
Keystone will play its final Colonial States Athletic Conference regular season match on Wednesday afternoon as the Giants travel to Centenary University. First serve between the Giants and Cyclones is set for 7:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, New Jersey.
