La Plume, Pa. – Cabrini University scored a late first half goal against the run of play and added another tally in the second half to defeat Keystone College 2-0 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference tilt on Tuesday night. The Cavaliers lift their record to 3-7-1 overall including a 3-0 mark in conference play while the Giants drop to 6-4-1 (1-1-1 CSAC) this fall.
Chances were limited for both sides over the first half hour of Tuesday night's contest before Keystone nearly went ahead on a mistake by Cabrini's defense as a pass back after a short goal kick nearly resulted in an own goal before a defender cleared the ball off the line with 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Giants continued to pressure with dangerous chances by
Talhah Netherlin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) just missing the mark before Cabrini took a 1-0 with just 2:19 remaining in the opening half. On a long restart, the ball fell to Josh Cunningham, who fed Kostas Slikas, who blasted a left-footed shot into the top of the net from 10 yards out to put the Cavaliers in front.
The visitors held the one-goal at advantage at halftime despite being doubled up in shots by Keystone over the first 45 minutes of action, 8-4.
The Giants were unable to cash in on several opportunities early in the second half before Cabrini took a 2-0 advantage in the 64
th minute when Andre Justin headed in a long throw-in from Matt Ochman.
That would mark the end of the scoring for the contest as Cabrini closed out its third straight victory, getting three saves from goalkeeper Mike Gould in the shutout.
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) made four stops in Keystone's net in the loss.
Both teams attempted 14 shots on the evening with the Cavaliers holding a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Giants generated 11 corner kick chances to four for the visitors, but were unable to take advantage of the restarts.
Netherlin paced Keystone with four shots in the contest while
Daniel Zuniga (Lakeland, Fla./McKeel Academy) attempted three shots in the loss.
The Giants will hit the road on Saturday afternoon for a CSAC contest at Immaculata University starting at 3:30 p.m.
