La Plume, Pa. – Centenary University scored twice in the final 11 minutes of Wednesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Keystone College to pull away with a 3-1 victory over the Giants. The Cyclones improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the win while Keystone slips to 4-6-1 this fall and 3-3 in the CSAC.
Centenary needed just 37 seconds to take a 1-0 lead in Wednesday night's tilt as Amanda Benoit one-touched home a cross served in by Chloe Christopher from the right flank.
Keystone responded in the 22
nd minute when
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) scored her team-leading 10
th goal of the season, shielding off a defender and lacing a shot from 16 yards out into the top of the net after taking a feed from
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) to knot the game up at 1-1. Hansen's assist was her second helper of the fall.
The Giants nearly went ahead in the 26
th minute, but Cyclone's goalkeeper Kaitlin Marold made a great reaction save to deny
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View)'s header from close range.
At the other end,
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) came up with a spectacular reflex save of her own to deny Christopher with just over a minute remaining in the opening stanza to keep the game level at one-apiece at halftime.
Centenary held a 12-7 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes of action and five corner kick chances to none for the Giants.
After several chances went by the wayside for both teams in the first 35 minutes of the second half, the Cyclones claimed a 2-1 edge in the 80
th minute when Jessica Benoit slotted a one-time shot inside the far post after taking a short pass in the box from Amanda Benoit.
Jessica Benoit put the game away in the 87
th minute, netting her second goal of the game by firing home a shot just inside the near post after settling a cross from the right side from Christopher.
Marold made three saves in the first half for Centenary before being replaced by Taylor Pryslak, who made two stops in the final 45 minutes of play to pick up the win.
Shepherd finished with a game-high nine shots for Keystone, who was led by three shots apiece from Cortes, Richner, and
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, N.Y./New Paltz).
The Cyclones held a 24-10 advantage in shots for the game including a 12-6 lead in shots on goal. The visitors had 11 corner kicks to just one for the Giants.
Keystone will visit Cabrini University on Saturday for another CSAC contest starting at 12:00 p.m. in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
