Clarks Summit, Pa. –
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) went 5-5 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 17 points to lead four players in double-figures as Keystone College defeated host Clarks Summit University 70-51 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.
Mayah Kitchen (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) added 16 points in the win for the Giants (2-3, 1-0 CSAC) while
Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) and
Maddy Moro (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) netted 10 points apiece with Moro rounding out a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Hutton made back-to-back three-pointers to start the game and Keystone led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter before closing the period with a 16-9 advantage.
Shiffer connected from downtown to start the second stanza before Clarks Summit (0-3, 0-1 CSAC) narrowed its deficit to six points at 19-9 with 8:38 left in the half. Keystone countered with an 8-0 burst to extend its lead to 27-13 on a Moro jumped at the 2:36 mark and the visitors would take a 29-17 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Defenders cut their Giants lead to 10 points early in the third period before Keystone used a 7-0 run to open up a 38-21 advantage with 6:19 remaining in the quarter. The visitors maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the quarter and took a 50-36 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
Keystone netted the first six points of the fourth quarter to open up a 20-point lead and led by as many as 22 points before closing out the 19-point victory.
Kitchen added eight rebounds for the Giants, who held a 39-21 advantage on the glass for the game. Shiffer handed out a game-high seven assists,
Bre Moore (Charleston, W.Va./Pennwood) chipped in with five assists, and
Autum Kitajima (Williamsport, Pa./Wellsboro Area) added four helpers for the visitors, who shot 45.5 percent from the field for the game including an outstanding, 8-13 (61.5 percent) showing from three-point range.
Natalie Tuffy paced Clarks Summit with 15 points and seven rebounds and was joined in double-figures by Torri Erdman (13), Randie Trexler (11), and Hannah Scarborough (10). Erdman paced the Defenders with five assists.
The hosts connected on 30.6 percent of their attempts from the floor on the evening while going 31.3 percent from long distance and 69.6 percent from the charity stripe.
Keystone will return home on Saturday afternoon to host Neumann University in a CSAC tilt starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
