La Plume, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy University ended Keystone College's playoffs hopes with a 101-67 victory on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Griffins lift their record to 18-5 on the year and 12-4 in the CSAC while the Giants slip to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
Gwynedd Mercy came out hot on Saturday, racing out to a 35-10 lead in the first 10:50 of the contest. Keystone used a 7-0 run to pull to within 18 points at the 5:10 mark on a
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) layup, but the Griffins countered with the next eight points and led by as many as 27 points before taking a 52-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Rip Engel led all players with 18 points while Courtney Cubbage added a first half double-double for Gwynedd Mercy on 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Griffins shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 4-10 from three-point range and 6-9 from the free throw line.
Kirkpatrick came off the bench to net eight points while
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) added six points for Keystone, who connected on just 22.6 percent of its field goal attempts including a cold, 1-12 effort from beyond the arc. The Giants were solid at the line in the first half though, connecting on 11 of 13 free throw attempts.
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Gwynedd Mercy countered with back-to-back treys of its own. Holding a 63-38 advantage five minutes into the stanza, the Griffins used a 7-0 spurt to stake out a 32-point advantage and would cruise the rest of the way, leading by as many as 41 points.
Engel scored a game-high 23 points and was joined in double-figures by Cubbage (13), Cedric Elleby (12), Arron Goodman (12), and Will Davis (11). Cubbage also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Griffins, who held a 59-35 advantage on the glass for the game. The visitors finished the contest hitting on 48.1 percent of their efforts from the floor while going 39.1 percent from long distance and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Gilliam, Kirkpatrick, and
Terrence Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./Lakeside) netted 12 points apiece for Keystone with Gilliam and
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) tying for the team-lead with six boards each. Belcher tied for a game-high with five assists, Drayton blocked three shots, and
Terrence Bowman (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) collected a pair of steals in the loss.
For the game, the Giants shot 33.9 percent from the field, 22.7 percent from downtown, and 60.6 percent from the line.
Keystone will visit local rival Marywood University on Wednesday night for a CSAC contest starting at 8:00 p.m. in Scranton.
