La Plume, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy University built a 35-18 lead at halftime of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball game at the Gambal Athletic Center and went on to pick up a 69-49 victory over Keystone College. The Griffins improve to 13-10 on the season and 11-3 in conference play while the Giants fall to 6-17 on the year and 5-9 in the CSAC.
Prior to Saturday's game, Keystone honored the team's four seniors:
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, Md./Walkersville),
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area),
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech), and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area). The Giants also recognized senior cheerleaders Alexandra Dunda, Kaleen Pastrana, Jordan Winkler, Bradley Parry, and KC mascot, Ross Haberek.
Keystone took an early, three-point lead on Saturday, but Gwynedd Mercy stormed back with an 11-0 run to claim a 12-4 advantage at the 4:20 mark. The visitors pushed their lead to 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Griffins pushed their lead to as many as 22 points in the second period before the Giants closed the frame with a 5-0 spurt to narrow Gwynedd Mercy lead to 35-18 at halftime
Chyanne Fine netted six points to lead Gwynedd Mercy in the first half while Nicole Dombrowski and Jayla Greene added five points apiece for the visitors, who got points from nine of the 10 players that saw action in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Griffins shot 38.9 percent from the floor over the first two quarters.
Nolen and
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) tallied five points apiece to pace Keystone while Williams paced all players with six rebounds in the first half. The Giants connected on 22.2 percent of their attempts from the floor in the first two stanzas.
Gwynedd Mercy extended its lead to 21 points at the 3:48 mark of the third quarter, but Keystone pulled to within 16 on two occasions before the Griffins took a 51-32 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Keystone continued to battle and narrowed its deficit to 57-42 with 6:44 remaining after Sugalski made a pair from the line, but Gwynedd Mercy prevented the Giants from coming any closer before going away with the 20-point victory.
Charlotte Kucowski scored a game-high 16 points to go along a team-leading seven rebounds for Gwynedd Mercy. Fine added 10 points while Bianca Adams dished out four assists for the Griffins, who shot 37.3 percent from the floor for the game, 23.8 percent from three-point range, and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. The visitors also claimed an 11-26 advantage in the turnover department.
Williams finished with a double-double in her final home game in a Keystone uniform with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and three blocked shots. Sugalski, Nolen, and
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) added seven points apiece with Garrett also collecting three steals.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) added three helpers for the Giants, who went 25.9 percent from the field, 25 percent from long distance, and 77.3 percent from the charity stripe.
The hosts also held a 51-35 in rebounding for the game.
Keystone will return to action on Wednesday evening with a CSAC tilt at Cabrini University that is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
