Keystone Opens Season With 12-11 Triumph at DeSales

Hawkins records six points; becomes first player in program history with 100 career points

Center Valley, Pa. – Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) recorded six points including the 100th of her collegiate career, Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) netted four goals, and Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) made 18 saves to lift Keystone College to a 12-11 victory at DeSales University in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

Hawkins, who finished with a game-high five goals to go along with an assist, became the first player in Keystone history to reach the 100-point plateau with an unassisted goal with 9:20 remaining in the second half.  The junior midfielder now has 102 career points on 74 goals and 28 assists.

Hawkins opened the scoring with an unassisted goal eight and a half minutes into Friday's contest for Keystone (1-0) before DeSales (0-1), playing their first game in program history in their first season of varsity competition, leveled the contest at the 19:43 mark of the first half.  Keystone answered with next two goals of the contest – both scored by Smith – to take a 3-1 advantage with 18:11 remaining in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs used a three-goal run to claim a 4-3 edge before Smith completed her hat trick with 8:34 remaining in the first period to knot the score back up at four-apiece.  Smith's fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot with just under three minutes left gave the Giants a 5-4 edge, but DeSales equalized just 14 seconds later.

Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) then put Keystone back in front by scoring off an assist from Hawkins before a goal by the hosts with just 16 seconds remaining in the opening stanza to send the game into halftime deadlocked at 6-6.

Hawkins and Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) scored the first two goals of the second half to give the Giants an 8-6 edge with April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) setting up Keystone's eighth goal of the game.

DeSales sandwiched a pair of tallies around a Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) goal to make it an 9-8 game with 10 minutes remaining before Hawkins completed her hat trick with 9:20 left to give the junior the 100th point of her collegiate career along with a 10-8 edge for the visitors.

After a DeSales goal, Hawkins netted her fourth marker of the afternoon to push Keystone's lead to 11-9 with eight minutes showing on the clock, but the Bulldogs leveled the contest with the next two goals.  Hawkins broke the tie for good with 5:35 left after taking a feed from Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) and scoring her fifth goal of the day.

Leenas and Llewellyn tied for the Keystone team-lead with three groundballs apiece while Hawkins and Hodanich were credited with a pair of caused turnovers each.  Hodanich also led the squad with three draw controls on the day.

DeSales held a 38-28 advantage in shots for the game, but Leenas's 18-save effort, the second best single game effort in program history, earned her the win while her counterpart, Lori King, made 10 stops in the loss.  Leenas also picked up an assist on the Giants' third goal of the game.

The Bulldogs, who held a 20-17 edge in groundballs and a 17-8 lead in draw controls, were paced by Danielle Burke and Katie Kingsland, who had four goals and one assist each in the loss.

Keystone will play its home opener on Sunday afternoon against King's College.  Opening draw of the non-conference game between the Giants and Monarchs is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
