Radnor, Pa. – Trailing by nine points at halftime of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball game, Cabrini University outscored visiting Keystone College 64-39 in the second half to pull away with a 103-87 victory. The Cavaliers improve to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in conference action while the Giants slip to 6-15 on the year and 3-11 in the CSAC.
Cabrini built a 27-20 lead with 8:43 remaining in the first half before Keystone embarked on a 19-4 run to claim a 39-31 advantage with three and a half minutes remaining when
Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) connected on a three-pointer. The Cavaliers cut their deficit to six points twice in the final minute before
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) gave the Giants a 48-39 lead at halftime by connecting on a trey at the buzzer.
Gilliam led all players with 12 points to go along with six rebounds in the first half while
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) netted 10 points for Keystone.
Devin Stricklin (Midland, Tex./Pro Vision Prep) dished out five assists for the Giants, who shot 44.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play and knocked down six of 11 attempts from three-point range to build the nine-point lead at the break.
Tyheim Monroe paced Cabrini with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half as the Cavaliers connected on 40.5 percent of their attempts from the floor while going 2-10 from downtown.
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Rialto) scored on a layup to open the second half and give Keystone an 11-point advantage, but Cabrini stormed back with a 20-6 burst to claim a 62-59 edge with just under 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
Keystone went back in front, 64-62, on a layup by Gilliam at the 11:47 mark, but the Cavaliers countered with an 11-2 run to hold a 73-66 lead with 8:34 remaining. The Giants narrowed their deficit two four points twice in the next two minutes, but Cabrini took control of the game with a 15-4 burst that put the hosts up 90-75 with 4:39 remaining.
Monroe finished with game-highs of 29 points and 18 rebounds while Ryan Charity netted 27 points for Cabrini. Deryl Bagwell (14) and DeVahnte Mosley (12) also reached double-figures with Bagwell dishing out a game-high seven assists. The Cavaliers, who held a 52-43 advantage on the glass, made half of their field goal attempts on the day while going 31.8 percent from beyond the arc and 73.7 percent from the free throw line.
Belcher paced Keystone with 21 points to go along with five assists while Gilliam added 17 points. Diaz tallied 14 points and
Ray Mills (Philadelphia, Pa./Overbrook) added 12 points in the loss while
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) led the Giants with seven rebounds. Gilliam and Williams tied for a game-high with three steals apiece wile Stricklin blocked a pair of shots for the visitors, who went 44.9 percent from the floor on the afternoon including a 42.1 percent effort from three-point land.
Keystone will return home on Wednesday night for a CSAC tilt against local rival Clarks Summit University starting at 8:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center. The contest will be part of the Giants' Think Pink Night to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
