La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College completed a season sweep of Clarks Summit University on Wednesday night with an 84-66 victory over the Defenders in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Giants improve to 7-15 overall and 4-11 in conference play with their second win in as many games over the Defenders (1-21, 0-15 CSAC) this season after posting a 94-75 triumph at Clarks Summit on January 3.
Keystone enjoyed a successful night off the court as well as the game was part of the Giants' annual Think Pink Night which raised awareness and money in the battle against breast cancer.
Keystone built an 18-9 advantage over the first 7:46 of Wednesday's contest after
Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) connected on a three-pointer, but Clarks Summit netted the next eight points to pull to within one at 18-17. The Giants pushed its lead back to 10 points before the Defenders used a 10-3 burst to make it a three-point game, 34-31, with 2:04 remaining in the first half,
Keystone had the final surge of the half though, tallying the last eight points of the frame to hold a 42-31 lead at the halftime break.
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) and
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) tallied nine points apiece in the first half to lead Keystone with Drayton pulling down a team-best six rebounds. The Giants connected on 41.7 percent of their attempts from the floor in the opening stanza including a 3-13 effort from three-point.
Antwan Bradley paced Clarks Summit with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes of play as the Defenders shot 38.2 percent from the field in the frame while going 4-13 from beyond the arc.
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) opened the second half with a three-pointer to push Keystone's lead to 14 points before Clarks Summit pushed back to within six points at 47-41 with 17:38 left on the clock. The Giants extended its advantage to 19 points with just under 12 minutes remaining when Kirkpatrick drained a pair from the line, but the Defenders pulled back to within 10 points with six and a half minutes left.
Keystone took final control of the contest with a 9-0 spurt that pushed its lead to 80-61 at the 3:45 mark and cruised to the 18-point victory.
Kirkpatrick finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Drayton added 15 points and a game-high 13 boards to lead Keystone. Gilliam added 13 points while
Devin Stricklin (Midland, Tex./Pro Vision Prep) dished out a game-high six assists while leading all players with four steals.
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ) chipped in with nine points for the Giants, who finished the evening hitting on 45.7 percent of their attempts from the field while going 27.3 percent from three-point range.
Bradley tallied a game-high 22 points for Clarks Summit and was joined in double-figures by John McClosky (12) and Nick Peter (11). McCloskey pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to round out a double-double while Steven Marvin led the Defenders with five assists. For the game, the visitors shot 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from long range.
Keystone claimed a 51-37 advantage on the glass and committed just 11 turnovers to 17 for Clarks Summit.
The Giants will host Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday in a CSAC tilt starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
