Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Keystone College's softball opened the 2017 season on Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic by splitting a pair of game. The Giants (1-1) dropped the opener to Mount Saint Vincent College 7-2 before rebounding for a 4-2 victory over Bay Path University in the nightcap.
Game 1 vs. Mount Saint Vincent
In Monday's season opener against Mount Saint Vincent (1-0), Keystone opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) drove in
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) with a single, but the Dolphins took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame.
The Giants knotted the game back up at two-apiece in the third inning when
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) came home on a base hit from
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman), but Mount Saint Vincent went back in front with a run of their own in their half of the inning.
The Dolphins added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring the final three runs of the contest in fifth inning.
Mount Saint Vincent, who had four players record two hits in the game, got a complete game in the circle from Mackenzie Heizer, who allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters in the game.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss for Keystone after yielding five earned runs on 11 hits while fanning three batters in a complete game for the Giants, who were paced offensively by two hits from Stacey.
Game 2 vs. Bay Path
In Monday's nightcap against Bay Path (1-1), Keystone defeated the Wildcats 4-2 to give first-year head coach
Alison Ritter her first career coaching victory for the Giants.
Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Long doubled home
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) before coming around to score on an RBI base hit off the bat Scialpi.
The Giants added a pair of insurance runs in the visitor's seventh as Lloyd scored on another RBI single from Scialpi before
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Bay Path scored a pair of runs in their last chance at-bats before
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) shut the door for her first collegiate win. The freshman tossed a complete game while scattering eight hits and striking out six batters.
Stacey and Scialp paced the Giants with two hits apiece on the day.
Felicia Gaillardetz suffered the loss for the Wildcats after yielding four runs on eight hits while fanning seven batters.
Marissa Sarna-McCarthy went 4-4 at the plate to lead Bay Path in the loss.

Keystone will be right back in action on Tuesday with another pair of games. The Giants will take on Lycoming College at 11:30 a.m. followed by a contest against Gettysburg College starting at 1:30 p.m.
