Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Keystone College's softball team wrapped up its spring break trip on Friday by splitting a pair of games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in South Carolina. The Giants (3-5) defeated Franciscan University 10-4 in Friday's opener before being edged by Albertus Magnus College in their final game of the trip, 5-4.
Game 1 vs. Franciscan
Franciscan (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in Friday's opener on an RBI double, but Keystone tied the game up in their next at bats on an RBI single from
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland).
The Giants then scored four runs on three hits and one error in the visitor's fourth to open up a 5-1 advantage.
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) connected on a two-run base hit before
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) drove in runs with singles of their own.
The Barons cut their deficit to 5-4 with a three-run fifth inning, but Keystone pulled away with the final five runs of the contest.
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) drove in a pair with a single in the visitor's sixth,
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) hit a two-run base hit in the top of the seventh, and Fitch drove in Scialpi with another single later in the inning to close out the scoring.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) notched the win in the circle for the Giants, tossing a complete game with four runs against on 11 hits while striking out five batters on the day.
Schantz went 3-4 with two RBI, Stacey was 3-3 at the plate, and Scialpi drove in a pair of runs to lead Keystone at the dish. Long and Loughney also had two hits apiece as the Giants held a 14-11 advantage in hits for the contest.
Amanda Pulice suffered the loss for Franciscan in a complete game effort with 10 runs against on 14 hits to go along with a pair of K's. Dennise Carrazco, Ashley Kondracki, Kayla Anderson, and Anna King had two hits apiece in the defeat for the Barons.
Game 2 vs. Albertus Magnus
Albertus Magnus (4-4) edged Keystone 5-4 in a hard-fought game two to deny the Giants their second victory of the day.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held the two-run edge until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Giants scored four runs on four hits and two errors to claim a 4-2 edge. Long hit an RBI double before coming home on a single from
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton). Stacey then connected on a two-run base hit to put Keystone ahead.
Albertus Magnus rallied with three runs on two hits and two errors the following inning to claim a 5-4 edge and the Falcons would hold on the to secure the one-run victory.
Megan Ferraro picked up the win after allowing just one hit over the final 3.1 innings in the circle after coming on in relief of Albertus Magnus starter Kristen Cunning, who yielded four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
Amanada Jessey had two hits and two RBI for the Falcons while Marissa Guglielmi also drove in a pair of runs.
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in a complete game on the rubber for Keystone.
Stacey's two-hit, two-RBI performance led the Giants' offense in the loss.
