Radnor, Pa. – Cabrini University swept a pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference softball games from visiting Keystone College on Saturday as the two teams opened league play. The Cavaliers, who won the first game 11-10 in eight innings before picking up a 6-3 win in the nightcap, improve to 3-9 (2-0 CSAC) on the year while dropping the Giants to 3-7 (0-2 CSAC) this spring.
Game 1
In Saturday's opener,
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) hit an RBI triple in the top of the first inning to give Keystone a 1-0 lead. The triple was the 12
th of Long's career, tying her Karly Evans for the Giants' all-time lead which Evans set between 2001-2004.
Cabrini tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning before
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) gave the Giants a 2-1 edge with a solo home run in the visitor's fourth. The Cavaliers countered with three runs in their half of the inning to claim a 4-2 lead.
Keystone went back in front, 6-4, with four runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning.
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) and
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) sandwiched RBI singles around a two-run base hit from
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area).
The following inning, Fitch delivered her second home run of the game, a three-run shot to give the visitors a 9-4 advantage.
The Cavaliers plated four runs in the home sixth to make it a one-run ballgame before tying the contest at 9-9 on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Keystone went up 10-9 in the top of the eighth inning, but Cabrini walked off in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run double from Alexandra Schell.
Jess Giordano toss 5.2 innings for the Cavaliers, allowing nine runs on 14 hits while Taylor Gallagher yielded one run on four hits in 2.1 innings in the circle.
Alexandria Ramos and Taylor Mack had three hits apiece for Cabrini in the game one victory.
Hughes tossed five innings for the Giants and was charged with six earned runs on nine hits while striking out two batters.
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits while fanning one batter in two innings.
Lloyd and Fitch led Keystone with three hits apiece as the Giants held an 18-15 advantage in hits for the game.
Game 2
In Saturday's nightcap, Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Long scored on an error and the Giants doubled their lead the following inning on an RBI double from
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North).
Cabrini got a run back in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run, but Keystone answered right back in their next trip to the plate at
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) launched her first collegiate home run over the left field fence to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.
The Cavaliers made it a one-run game in the home fourth before surging ahead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the come from behind victory.
Jenna Rodriguez tossed a complete game for Cabrini, allowing three runs on seven hits to pick up the win.
Marissa Alpaugh led the Cavaliers with three hits as the hosts outhit the Giants 13-7 in the nightcap.
Hodle took the loss for Keystone after surrendering six runs on 11 hits in four innings in the circle while Hughes pitched a pair of scoreless innings with one K and two hits against.
Schantz had a pair of extra base hits for the Giants while
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman) also collected two hits in the loss for Keystone.
