La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College and King's College each won a game in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Edmunds Field. The Monarchs (11-9) won the first game 11-3 in five innings before the Giants (6-14) bounced back to post a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
Game 1
King's took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats of Monday's opener on RBI groundout before Keystone leveled the contest at 1-1 in their first trips to the plate as
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) laced a solo home run over the right field fence.
The Monarchs took a 3-1 in the top of the third inning by scoring a pair of runs on three hits, taking the lead on an RBI groundout before getting and RBI single down the left field line.
The Giants answered right back in the home half of the third when
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) connected on a two-run double to tie the game up at 3-3, but the Monarchs went back, 5-3, in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.
King's broke the game open in the visitor's fifth by scoring six runs on seven hits to build an 11-3 advantage and held on for the run-rule victory by keeping the hosts off the board in the home half of the frame.
Taylor Norris picked up the win for the Monarchs by holding the Giants to three runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Kristina Kocher pitched out off a jam in the fourth inning for King's and finished off two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one hit against.
Samantha Bloom and Rachael DeTore had three hits apiece to lead King's who outhit the Giants by a 16-8 margin in the game. Megan Beaupre had a game-high five RBI in the win for the Monarchs.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss after yielding five runs on nine hits while fanning two batters in the first four innings in the circle for Keystone.
Ashley Constable (Bangor, Pa./Bangor Area) picked up a pair of K's while yielding six runs on seven hits in an inning of work.
Lloyd, Long, and
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) had two hits apiece for the Giants in the game one setback.
Game 2
Keystone took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of Monday's nightcap by scoring four runs on five hits.
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) drove in pinch runner with a double to the gap in right center before scoring on a base hit up the middle off the bat of Lloyd.
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) then doubled to the wall in right center to score Long before scoring on an infield single from Schantz.
The Giants extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Fitch scored on a wild pitch.
King's battled back into the game by putting up three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning to cut Keystone's lead to 5-3, but the Giants got the run back in the bottom half of the frame when
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored on a sacrifice fly from
Nicole Shay (Thompson, Pa./Susquehanna Community) to restore the host's three-run advantage.
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) picked up her third win of the season for the Giants by tossing six innings and allowing three runs on 11 hits.
Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) came on in the seventh inning and recorded the save by retiring the side in order.
Schantz led Keystone with three hits while Hartman, Fitch, and Monetti collected two hits apiece in the nightcap for the Giants, who held a 12-11 edge in hits in the game two win.
Kocher took the loss for King's after yielding three runs on six hits in two innings while the Monarchs used a pair of relievers to work through the remainder of the game.
Bloom and Ally DeVoir paced the visitors with three hits apiece in the loss.

Keystone will resume Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader against local rival Clarks Summit University starting at 3:00 p.m. at Edmunds Field.
