La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College outscored visiting Clarks Summit University 15-3 on Thursday afternoon to earn a sweep of the Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader between the two local rivals at Edmunds Field. The Giants won Thursday's opener 7-3 before shutting out the Defenders 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap to improve to 8-14 overall and 4-8 in the CSAC.
Game 1
Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in Thursday's opener with a pair of unearned runs.
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) scored the first run of the game when Clarks Summit committed an error on a ball hit by
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional), who then scored on a double to the gap from
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area).
Clarks Summit (6-18, 1-11 CSAC) got a run back in the top of the second on an RBI single, but the Giants answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame as Lloyd connected on a two-run double to wall in left center to give the hosts a 4-1 advantage.
After the Defenders pulled to within two with a run in the top of the fifth inning, Keystone plated three runs on three hits and two errors to take 7-2 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) came home on an error on a ball hit by
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton), who later scored on a double from Lloyd. Lloyd scored the Giants' seventh run on a throwing error after Fitch reached on an RBI single.
Clarks Summit got a run back in the top of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Keystone closed out the four-run victory.
Keystone starting pitcher
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) picked up her third win of the season after pitching five innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out seven batters.
Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) notched her second save in as many games with one run against on one hit to go along with one K in two innings in relief.
Fitch led the Giants with three hits while Lloyd and Monetti collected two hits apiece as the hosts doubled up the Defenders in hits for the game, 10-5. Lloyd drove in a game-high three runs for Keystone in the win.
Allison Glennon was charged with the loss after yielding seven runs – just two of which were earned – on 10 hits while fanning four batters in a complete game for the Defenders, who got hits from five different players in the contest.
Game 2
Keystone jumped out to a strong start in Thursday's nightcap by scoring five runs on four hits and one error. Lloyd laced a two-run home run over the right field fence before
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) hit a three-run double to the wall in right center to give Keystone a 5-0 lead.
Keystone added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) drove in
Alysa Beyers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) with a base hit up the middle before Lloyd connected on her second home run of the game, a two-run shot to the opposite field to give the Giants an 8-0 advantage.
Aniska earned her second win of the season in the circle, pitching three scoreless innings with one strikeout and four hits against.
Ashley Constable (Bangor, Pa./Bangor Area) yielded just one hit and struck out three in the final two innings for the Giants.
Lloyd went 3-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, Schantz had a pair of hits and three RBI, and Dermont added two hits and two runs scored for Keystone, who held an 8-5 edge in hits in the game two victory.
Glennon took the loss for the Defenders after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits in four innings.
Justine Makinson led Clarks Summit with a pair of hits in the game two setback.
