La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's bats came alive as the Giants scored 31 runs while sweeping a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Cairn University on Friday at Edmunds Field. The Giants won the opener 21-2 in five innings before claiming the nightcap 10-2, also in five innings, to improve to 12-22 overall and 7-13 in the CSAC.
Game 1
Keystone jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Friday's opener, scoring five runs on three hits and two errors.
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) came home on a misplay by the Highlanders on a ball hit by
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) before
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) delivered a grand slam home run, her fourth homer of the season, over the left field fence to give the Giants the five-run advantage.
Keystone broke the game open by scoring 10 runs on 10 hits in the home second to claim a commanding, 15-0 lead.
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) hit a two-run home run to center field, her first round-tripper of the year, before Fitch singled up the middle to give Keystone an eight-run lead.
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) drew a bases-loaded walk before Hartman hit a two-run single. Dermont followed with an RBI single before Lloyd hit her sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot to center, to give the Giants the 15-run advantage.
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) got into the long ball act on the bottom of the third inning, connecting on solo home run to give Keystone a 16-0 cushion. The freshman's solo shot to left tied Schantz for Keystone's single-season record of seven home runs, set two times prior by Abby Cohen (2010, 2013).
Cairn (13-19, 1-19 CSAC) got on the board with two runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning, but the Keystone answered back with five runs on four hits in the home half of the frame to open up a 21-2 lead.
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) worked a bases-loaded walk before Schantz hit a two-run double. Kassadi Wood followed with an RBI base hit before Hartman drew a bases-loaded walk.
Ashley Constable (Bangor, Pa./Bangor Area) picked up her first win of the season in the circle by pitching a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
Dermont went 5-5 with four RBI and four runs scored to lead Keystone's offense, Schantz had three hits, and Fitch drove in a game-high five runs as the hosts outhit the Highlanders 18-6 in the contest.
Cairn starter Meagan Maratita suffered the loss after allowing 15 runs on 13 hits in two innings while Haley Tinney was charged with six runs on five hits in the final two innings.
Jessica Rolo paced the visitors with a pair of hits in the game one setback.
Game 2
Cairn took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats in Friday's nightcap with an RBI double down the left field line, but Keystone went ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lloyd scored on a sacrifice fly by Schantz before Dermont hit an RBI double to left center to bring home Scialpi while give the Giants a 2-1 edge.
The Highlanders tied the contest at two-apiece on an RBI double in the visitor's third, but Keystone went back in front in the home half of the frame on an RBI groundout from Lloyd.
The Giants opened up an 8-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five runs on three hits and one error by the visitors. Schantz came home on a throwing error before Harman hit an RBI single.
Alysa Beyers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) then scored on a sacrifice fly from
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) and Long hit an RBI double for drive in the 106th run of her career, breaking Keystone's all-time record for RBI in a career previously set by Cohen from 2010-2013. Long then came home as Lloyd was caught stealing to push Keystone's lead to six runs.
Keystone walked off with its second run-rule victory of the day by scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Scialpi hit an RBI double down the left field line before coming home with the game-ending run on a single from Schantz.
Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) notched her third win of the season with a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out one batter.
Dermont led Keystone with a pair of hits while Schantz drove in two runs in the game two victory as the Giants held an 8-6 edge in hits for the contest.
Tinney was charged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs on eight hits while fanning one batter in four innings of work for the Highlanders,
Tinney and Maratita collected two hits apiece in the game two loss for Cairn.

Keystone will close out the 2017 season tomorrow afternoon with a CSAC doubleheader against Centenary University starting at 1:00 p.m. The Giants will honor the team's four seniors who will be making their final appearances in a Keystone uniform on Saturday.
