Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Keystone College rebounded from a 9-5 setback in the opening game of Wednesday's Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Gwynedd Mercy University to win the nightcap, 7-3, for its first conference win of the season. The Giants move to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the CSAC while snapping a six-game losing skids while the Griffins see their record shift to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in the CSAC.
Game 1
Keystone scored three runs in its first at-bats on Wednesday afternoon to take a 3-0 lead in game one.
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) hit an RBI single up the middle before
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) connected on a two-run double to give the Giants the three-run advantage.
Gwynedd Mercy cut its deficit to 3-2 on a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double. The Griffins then plated six runs on three hits and two errors by the visitors to claim an 8-3 lead at the end of two innings of play.
Another RBI base hit from Fitch in the top of the third inning brought Keystone to within four runs before
Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) doubled to left field to make it an 8-5 ballgame.
Gwynedd Mercy got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Giants off the board in the top of the seventh inning to secure the four-run victory.
Alyssa Morales picked up the win for the Griffins after allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings while Alexis Gartner pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with four hits against to close out the win.
Morales, Jessica Behr, and Lauren Waller had two hits apiece for the hosts with Behr driving in a game-high three runs.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss after surrendering eight earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters in a complete game in the circle for Keystone.
Fitch went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Giants, who held a 12-7 advantage in hits in the game.
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) added two hits apiece in the loss.
Game 2
Keystone took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bats of game two as Lloyd and
Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) came home on a fielding error by Gwynedd Mercy.
Keystone scored four runs on four hits and one error in the top of the third inning to open up a 6-0 advantage. Fitch connected on an RBI double before Schantz drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a four-run game. Scialpi then came home on an error by the Griffins as Schantz stole second before
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) hit an RBI double to left field.
Gwynedd Mercy got on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning to make it a five-run game, but Stacey drove in
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) with a double in the visitor's sixth to restore Keystone's six-run cushion at 7-1.
The Griffins scored on an RBI base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within five runs and got a solo home run in the home seventh, but were unable to push any more runs across as the Giants earned the four-run win.
Keystone starter
Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) tossed a complete game with three runs against on 11 hits.
Scialpi had a pair of hits for the Giants, who got hits from eight of their nine starting hitters in the game two victory.
Marissa Campbell was charged with the loss for the Griffins after allowing six runs on six hits in the 2.1 innings while Gartner yielded one run on three hits in 4.2 innings in relief.
Jenna Trythall paced Gwynedd Mercy with three hits in the loss.
