Glassboro, N.J. – Keystone College's men's soccer team opened the 2017 campaign on Friday night with a hard-fought 3-2 setback at Rowan University, ranked 17
th in the nation to start the season, on the first day of the Gilmore Alumni Classic.
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) and
Andrew Lupinacci (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) scored goals for the Giants (0-1), who got eight saves from goalkeeper
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) in the narrow defeat.
After holding the better of play throughout the first half, Rowan (1-0) opened the scoring in the 37
th minute when Ryan Logar deposited a loose ball from the top of the box into the back. The Profs would take the one-goal edge into halftime while outshooting the Giants 15-1 over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Rowan doubled its lead just 3:54 into the second half when Jake Connors scored on a blast from 30 yards out and the Profs pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the 67
th minute Matt Hendrickson scored from just inside the right side of the penalty area.
Keystone refused to go quietly though and Bonilla put the Giants on the board in the 75
th minute, corralling a loose ball in the box and tucking home a shot with the goalkeeper out of the net for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Lupinacci closed out the scoring in the 90
th minute by blasting home a shot after taking a feed from
Aidan Powers (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who recorded his first collegiate point of his career with the helper.
Rowan held a 29-4 advantage in shots for the game including an 11-4 lead in shots on goal. The Profs also doubled up the Giants in corner kicks, 6-3, while getting one save apiece from Kyle Dennis and Kyler White who split the goaltending duties for the host.
Keystone will close out this weekend's tournament tomorrow evening when it takes on Rutgers-Camden starting at 5:00 p.m. at Rowan.
